Ports A–Z

Cruise ports A–Z

Cruise itineraries often name the port, not the city you came to see. This index shows which port is which, what else it is called and where to read more on this site.

In short

Many cruise ports are named after a small town near a famous city: Civitavecchia is the port for Rome, Piraeus for Athens, Le Havre for Paris and Normandy, Livorno for Florence and Pisa, Katakolon for Olympia. Below, every port on this site with its country, other names, the city it serves and links to our guides.

Frequently asked questions

Is Civitavecchia the same as Rome?

No. Civitavecchia is a port town about 80 km north-west of Rome. Cruise itineraries often say “Rome (Civitavecchia)”; from the pier it is about an hour by train to the city, more by road.

Which port is Athens?

Piraeus, about 12 km from the centre of Athens. Some ships use Lavrio, further south-east. Itineraries usually write “Athens (Piraeus)”.

Why does my itinerary say a port I have never heard of?

Large ships need deep water and space, so they dock at a nearby port rather than in the famous city itself: Le Havre for Paris, Livorno for Florence, Katakolon for Olympia. Check the distance before planning a day ashore.
