Cruises From Bari: Greece and the Adriatic All Year, From Puglia's Old Port

Bari is the main port of Puglia, the heel of Italy's boot. Week-long Eastern Mediterranean cruises leave here all year round, to the Greek islands, Croatia and Montenegro. The terminal is in the port next to the old town and the Basilica of San Nicola, and there are direct flights from Amsterdam and Brussels.

In short

Bari is a cruise port in southern Italy: the terminal is next to the old town, a 10–15 minute walk from the Basilica of San Nicola. Direct flights from Amsterdam and Brussels take about 2.5 hours, then 20 minutes by train from the airport. Sailings run all year, busiest in July and October, usually for 7 nights.

Why Bari

  • A port next to the old town. From the port gate to Bari Vecchia and the Basilica of San Nicola is a 10–15 minute walk. The city starts almost as soon as you leave the quay.
  • Cruises all year round. Ships leave Bari every month, even in winter — usually for a week around Greece and the Adriatic.
  • A direct flight from the Netherlands and Belgium. About two and a half hours from Amsterdam or Brussels, and 20 minutes by train from the airport to the city centre.
  • Puglia before the cruise. The trulli of Alberobello, the cave city of Matera and white Polignano a Mare — worth arriving a day or two early for.

Where cruises from Bari go

Almost every sailing from Bari is a week in the Eastern Mediterranean. These are the main options:

RouteTypical lengthWhenGood to know
Eastern Mediterranean7 nightsAll year, busiest in July and OctoberBari's main route: the Greek islands, Croatia, Montenegro, often with a call in Venice or Trieste; usually back in Bari
Short cruises2–5 nightsOccasionally in winter and the shoulder season — January, March, October and NovemberUsually a ship moving to a nearby port — a good taster cruise; check where it ends
Longer sailings10–14 nightsThe odd date in springMore ports and sea days; rare

Based on cruise line schedules for 2026–2027. Ships, ports and dates change; always check the specific sailing.

Good to know: Bari is often a mid-cruise embarkation port. The ship arrives in the morning with guests who boarded elsewhere, you go on board during the day — and seven nights later you disembark here. Your boarding time is in your documents, so there is no need to turn up much earlier.

Which season to choose

Spring in Puglia

18–27°C by day, with the sea warming up by June. May has noticeably more sailings than April, and the ports are still quiet.

A quiet winter

13–16°C by day. December and February have the fewest sailings, but there are some; January and March add short 2–5 night cruises.

Getting to the terminal

Bari's cruise terminal is in the port, next to the old town; passengers enter through the Varco della Vittoria gate. The port is large, and big ships sometimes berth at the outer quays. Your boarding documents show exactly where to go.

  • From the Netherlands and Belgium. Direct flights from Amsterdam and Brussels (mostly from Charleroi) take about two and a half hours. From Eindhoven you fly with a change. Fly in the day before: a morning flight on embarkation day is an unnecessary risk.
  • From the airport. Bari Karol Wojtyła airport is about 10 km north-west of the centre. Ferrotramviaria trains run to Bari Centrale in about 20 minutes, roughly every half hour. A taxi to the port takes 20–30 minutes.
  • From Bari Centrale station. The port is about 2 km away through the Murattiano district: 10–15 minutes by taxi, or 25–30 minutes on foot with luggage.
  • Inside the port. The walk from the gate to the ship can be long, so a shuttle bus usually runs on embarkation days. Check your cruise line's documents.
  • By car. There is cruise passenger parking by the terminal, and private car parks nearby usually run a shuttle to the terminal. Booking a space ahead is wise.
Good to know: ferries to Albania, Greece, Montenegro and Croatia use the same port. In summer there can be queues of cars and lorries at the gates, and the ferry and cruise terminals are easy to mix up. Follow signs for "crociere" (cruises), not "traghetti" (ferries), and allow extra time.

The night before: where to stay

Flying in on embarkation day turns every delay into stress. A night in Bari removes that risk — and gives you an evening in the old town.

Closest to the port

Bari Vecchia

The old town by the sea, with the Basilica of San Nicola and narrow lanes. 10–15 minutes on foot to the port gate, but traffic is restricted — a taxi cannot always reach the door.

Shops and restaurants

Murattiano

A 19th-century grid of straight streets around the shopping street Via Sparano, between the station and the old town. About 10 minutes to the port by taxi.

Arriving late

Near Bari Centrale

The airport train stops right here. In the morning it is 10–15 minutes to the port by taxi.

Puglia first

Alberobello or Matera

Spend a couple of days among the trulli or in the cave city of Matera, but sleep in Bari the last night: both are an hour to an hour and a half away.

If you have half a day in Bari

All of this is close to the port, so it fits before boarding or after you disembark:

  • The Basilica of San Nicola. An 11th-century Romanesque basilica holding the relics of Saint Nicholas. Pilgrims come from all over the world, including many Orthodox Christians.
  • Strada Arco Basso. A lane in the old town where local women make orecchiette by hand at tables outside their doors — the ear-shaped pasta of Puglia.
  • The cathedral and the Swabian castle. Bari's second great Romanesque church, San Sabino, a couple of minutes from the basilica, and the Norman-Swabian fortress at the edge of the old town.
  • The Lungomare. One of Italy's longest seafronts: palm trees, sea views and 1930s buildings. Best at sunset.
  • Polignano a Mare. A white town on cliffs above the sea, about half an hour by train from Bari Centrale. Worth it if you have a whole day.

The day you come back

The ship arrives in Bari in the morning, and guests who end their cruise here disembark in groups; the others stay on board and sail on. Your exact disembarkation time is in the documents you receive on board. The airport is 20–30 minutes away, but avoid morning flights — an afternoon departure is safer. If you have time, leave your bags at a luggage storage and stroll through the old town.

Practical tips

  • Check your boarding port. The same sailing may be sold with embarkation in Bari, Trieste or Venice. Book your hotel and flights for the port named in your booking.
  • Limited traffic zones. Cars without a permit cannot enter the old town and parts of the centre. If your hotel is in Bari Vecchia, ask where a taxi can drop you.
  • The afternoon break. Many shops and small museums close from about 1 to 5 p.m. Lunch in Puglia is not something to rush.
  • Transport strikes. Italian rail and airport staff strike from time to time, usually with a few days' notice. Check the news before you travel.
  • ID for everyone. Italy, Greece and Croatia are in Schengen; Montenegro, Albania and Turkey are not. If you do not hold a European passport, check entry rules for every country on the route in good time. Documents and visas →

Common questions

Which cruises leave from Bari?

Mostly week-long Eastern Mediterranean cruises to the Greek islands, Croatia and Montenegro, often with a call in Venice or Trieste. There are sailings all year, most in July and October, plus the occasional short cruise of 2–5 nights.

Where is the cruise terminal in Bari?

In the port next to the old town, with the entrance at the Varco della Vittoria gate. Big ships sometimes berth at the outer quays, and a shuttle usually runs from the gate. Your boarding documents show exactly where to go.

How do I get to Bari from the Netherlands or Belgium?

By direct flight from Amsterdam or Brussels (mostly Charleroi), about two and a half hours. From Eindhoven you fly with a change. From the airport, the train to Bari Centrale takes about 20 minutes, or a taxi to the port 20–30 minutes.

Where should I stay the night before a cruise from Bari?

Closest is the old town, Bari Vecchia, 10–15 minutes on foot to the port gate, though cars cannot reach every street. The Murattiano district and the area around the station also work well, 10–15 minutes from the port by taxi.

Why does my ship arrive in Bari with guests already on board?

Many week-long itineraries are loops through several ports, and you can start the cruise in any of them. In Bari you join mid-route and disembark here seven nights later. This is common practice and does not change your cruise.

Can I visit Alberobello and Matera before the cruise?

Yes, they make a good day or two before boarding. Alberobello is about an hour by car or around an hour and a half by train, and Matera about an hour by car. Spend the last night in Bari, though.

How the club fits in

Cruises from Bari that are available in the club work on the same terms as any other route. You choose one way to pay per booking: the member price (INsider Pricing), roughly 17% below the listed price, or your Reward Points, which can cover up to half of the cruise price. They do not add up. To pay up to 100% with points, you need to have accumulated enough points and book 270 days or more before departure.

Not every cruise line can be booked through the club: check the specific sailing in the club's search, or ask us and we will tell you which Bari dates are available in the month you have in mind.
