A day in port

Trieste in a Day From Your Cruise Ship: What You Can Really Fit In

Many passengers start their cruise in Trieste, but if you boarded elsewhere on the route, it is a single day ashore. The ship usually berths right in the centre, a couple of minutes from Piazza Unità d'Italia, and the whole Austro-Hungarian city — the seafront, the Grand Canal, San Giusto hill and the historic cafés — fits into a walk. On a long call there is Miramare Castle, or Slovenia on an excursion.

In short

Trieste: cruise ships usually berth at the Stazione Marittima on Molo dei Bersaglieri, 2–5 minutes' walk from Piazza Unità d'Italia, with no tenders. On foot you reach the Grand Canal, San Giusto hill with its cathedral, and the historic cafés. Four hours covers the centre; a full day adds Miramare Castle, 8 km away, or Slovenia on a ship's excursion.

Where do cruise ships berth in Trieste, and how do you get into town?

Usually at the Stazione Marittima on Molo dei Bersaglieri — which is the centre: Piazza Unità d'Italia is 2–5 minutes away on foot. With several ships in port, one may be sent to a quay in the commercial port, in which case there is a shuttle or you take a taxi.

QuestionAnswer
Where the ship berthsThe Stazione Marittima maritime station on Molo dei Bersaglieri, on the Rive seafront. On days with more than one ship, the second is sometimes berthed in the commercial port a few kilometres south (for example Molo VII). No tenders. Your berth is in the daily programme.
Into townFrom Molo dei Bersaglieri on foot: Piazza Unità d'Italia and Molo Audace 2–5 minutes, the Grand Canal about 10 minutes, Trieste Centrale station about 1.2 km, 15–20 minutes along the seafront.
Up to San GiustoThe hill with the cathedral and castle is 15–20 minutes on foot from Piazza Unità, up steps and steep lanes through the old town (Città Vecchia). You can take a taxi up and walk down.
Typical callUsually 8–10 hours. Trieste is also a start port, so some passengers change over on the day you call. Exact times are in the daily programme.
Money and languageEuro. Italian, and the city also has a Slovene-speaking community; English gets you by easily in the centre. Cards are taken almost everywhere.
DocumentsItaly is in the EU and Schengen. If the ship comes from another Schengen port, there is usually no separate check; if it comes from, say, Montenegro or Turkey, checks take place on board or at the port. Carry the document your cruise line asks for (what to check).
All aboardUsually 30–60 minutes before departure. From the centre the gangway is 5–10 minutes away; from Miramare Castle 20–30 minutes by taxi or bus — allow at least an hour's margin.

What can you fit into a day in port in Trieste?

Central Trieste is compact: the square, the seafront and the canal are within 10 minutes of the ship, and San Giusto hill within 20. A full day lets you add Miramare Castle on the shore of the gulf.

3–4 hours

Piazza Unità, the pier and the Grand Canal

From the gangway to Piazza Unità d'Italia, which opens straight onto the sea, and out along Molo Audace for the view of the city from the water. Then 10 minutes along the seafront to the Grand Canal in the Borgo Teresiano: the Serbian Orthodox church of San Spiridione, the bronze James Joyce on Ponte Rosso and the church of Sant'Antonio at the end of the canal.

5–6 hours

San Giusto hill and the cafés

Past the 1st-century Roman theatre at the foot of the hill, climb the old-town lanes to San Giusto cathedral and castle — 15–20 minutes uphill. From the ramparts you can see the port and your ship. On the way down, sit in one of the historic cafés: Caffè San Marco is about 20 minutes' walk from the square, Caffè Tommaseo is on the seafront.

Full day

Miramare Castle and the Barcola seafront

Archduke Maximilian's white castle and its park stand on a headland 8 km north-west. Buses 6 and 36 run from Trieste Centrale station to stops by the park in 20–30 minutes, then a 5–10 minute walk; a taxi takes about 15–20 minutes. On the way is Barcola, the city seafront where locals sunbathe on concrete terraces.

With children or taking it slow

The marine aquarium and the Rive

The small municipal marine aquarium is on the seafront next to the maritime station — an hour with children. Then a stroll along the Rive, out onto Molo Audace and an ice cream on the square. In summer the Delfino Verde boat runs along the coast from Molo Audace — check the timetable for your day.

Can you visit Slovenia or Venice from a cruise ship in Trieste?

On a ship's excursion, yes; on your own, with real risk. Slovenia is close: Postojna Cave is about an hour away, Ljubljana 1–1.5 hours and Bled about 2 hours. Venice is about 2 hours each way by train.

  • Postojna Cave. One of Europe's largest karst caves, visited in groups at set times. On an excursion it takes half a day — the most realistic trip across the border from a call in Trieste.
  • Ljubljana and Bled. Slovenia's capital and the lake with its island are lovely, but together they mean almost the whole day on a coach. Without a car, we would not try it on your own.
  • The border. Slovenia is in Schengen and you usually cross without stopping, but take your passport or the document your cruise line asks for.
  • Venice. The train from Trieste Centrale to Venezia Santa Lucia takes about 2 hours. On an 8–9 hour call that leaves 3–4 hours in the city and no margin for train delays. If Venice is a separate call on your itinerary: Venice in a day.

On your own or on a ship's excursion?

Trieste itself is easy on your own: the ship berths in the centre, the main sights are walkable and city buses run to Miramare Castle.

A ship's excursion makes more sense for trips out of town — Postojna, Ljubljana, Bled, Venice — and if your ship is at a distant quay in the commercial port. The ship generally waits for its own excursions if they run late — it does not wait for independent passengers.

How do you make sure you are back on board in Trieste?

  • Check your berth in the morning. If the ship is not on Molo dei Bersaglieri, ask at the exit where the shuttle leaves from and until when, and photograph the quay name for a taxi driver.
  • The bora. In autumn and winter a strong, cold wind blows down from the hills, with very sudden gusts. Keep a jacket handy and stay away from the edge of the piers.
  • San Giusto's steps. Going down is quick, going up is slow. Do the hill early in the day, not just before sailing.
  • The bus from Miramare. Buses are frequent, but the coast road can be congested at rush hour. Leave Miramare with at least an hour to spare.
  • What to take. Your cruise card, the document your cruise line asked for, water, comfortable shoes and a phone with the ship's emergency number.

Where do cruises calling at Trieste start?

Trieste is a call on Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean itineraries: sailings follow Croatia and Montenegro down to the Greek islands, and you can often board at several ports along the way. Departure ports:

Often on the same itinerary: Kotor, Dubrovnik and Split in a day.

In Trieste cruise ships usually berth at the Stazione Marittima on Molo dei Bersaglieri, in the city centre, 2–5 minutes' walk from Piazza Unità d'Italia. With several ships in port, one may be sent to a quay in the commercial port, with a shuttle or taxi into town.

How far is Trieste cruise terminal from Piazza Unità d'Italia?

Not far at all: from the Stazione Marittima to Piazza Unità d'Italia is 2–5 minutes on foot along the seafront. The Grand Canal is about 10 minutes away, and San Giusto hill with its cathedral 15–20 minutes uphill.

What can I see in Trieste in 4 hours from a cruise ship?

In 4 hours in Trieste you can walk Piazza Unità d'Italia, Molo Audace and the Grand Canal in the Borgo Teresiano, and climb San Giusto hill to the cathedral and castle. There is still time for a coffee in a historic café.

How do I get from Trieste cruise port to Miramare Castle?

Miramare Castle is 8 km from central Trieste. Buses 6 and 36 run from Trieste Centrale station to stops by the park in 20–30 minutes, followed by a 5–10 minute walk; a taxi takes about 15–20 minutes. In summer a boat also runs from Molo Audace.

Can I visit Venice from Trieste on a port day?

Technically yes: the train from Trieste Centrale to Venezia Santa Lucia takes about 2 hours. But on an 8–9 hour call that leaves 3–4 hours in Venice with no margin for delays, so a ship's excursion or a separate day in Venice is the safer choice.
