A day in port

Dubrovnik in a Day: the City Walls, the Stradun and the View From Mount Srđ

Dubrovnik is the best-known town on the Croatian coast: the whole Old Town is ringed by medieval walls, with the marble-paved Stradun, monasteries and palaces inside. Most ships, though, berth not by the walls but at Gruž port, three kilometres away. So your day starts with a short journey — and how you plan it decides how much you see.

In short

Most ships berth at Gruž, 3 km from the Old Town: the Pile Gate is 15–20 minutes away by bus, shuttle or taxi. Smaller ships sometimes anchor and tender passengers straight into the Old Port. In a day you can walk the walls and the Stradun and ride the cable car. Croatia uses the euro and is in Schengen.

The port at a glance

QuestionAnswer
Where the ship berthsDepends on the size of the ship and the day. Most often at the piers of Gruž port, north-west of the Old Town. Smaller ships, and sometimes others, anchor off the Old Town and tender passengers into the Old Port below the walls.
To the Old TownFrom Gruž it is about 3 km to the Pile Gate: city bus 10–20 minutes, cruise line shuttle (usually charged) or taxi 10–15 minutes, longer at peak times. On foot 35–45 minutes along the road. From the tender you are already in the Old Town.
Typical callUsually 7–10 hours. The exact times are in the ship's daily programme.
MoneyEuro. Cards are taken almost everywhere; cash comes in handy for boats and small purchases.
LanguageCroatian. English is spoken almost everywhere in the Old Town.
DocumentsCroatia has been in the EU and Schengen since 2023. If the ship comes from another Schengen port, there is usually no separate passport check; if it comes from outside Schengen (from Montenegro, for example), checks take place on board or at the port. Carry the document your cruise line asks for (what to check).
Mobile dataCroatia is in the EU's roam-like-at-home zone. Just make sure your phone has switched from the ship's maritime network once you are ashore.
All aboardUsually 30–60 minutes before departure. Go by the time in the daily programme and on your cruise card, not by clocks in town.

What to fit in

The Old Town is compact: the Stradun, its main street, runs about 300 metres from the Pile Gate in the west to the Old Port and the Ploče Gate in the east. Around it runs a circuit of walls almost two kilometres long, and above the town rises Mount Srđ with its cable car.

3–4 hours

The Stradun and the walls

Through the Pile Gate, past Onofrio's Great Fountain and the Franciscan Monastery with one of Europe's oldest pharmacies, then along the Stradun to the Rector's Palace and the cathedral. After that, up onto the walls: the full circuit is about 2 km and takes an hour and a half to two hours. There is hardly any shade up there.

A full day

Walls in the morning, Srđ later

Head for the walls as soon as you are ashore, while it is cooler and quieter. After lunch, take the cable car up Mount Srđ — a few minutes' ride above the Old Town. From the top you see the walls, Lokrum and the Elaphiti Islands. Allow about an hour up there.

Been here before

Lokrum island

Boats leave the Old Port for Lokrum and take about 15 minutes. It is a protected island with a botanical garden, the ruins of a monastery, peacocks and rocky spots for a swim. Allow two to three hours and check the time of the last boat back.

With children or at a slow pace

Fort Lovrijenac and the beach

Fort Lovrijenac stands on a rock just outside the Pile Gate, and its view of the walls is one of the best in town. Then on to Banje beach outside the Ploče Gate, looking across to the Old Port. An ice cream on the Stradun, and back to the bus with no rush.

Dubrovnik and the crowds: what to know

The city has been working for years to ease pressure on the Old Town. Under its "Respect the City" programme it agrees call schedules with the cruise lines: usually no more than two ships a day, with staggered times. Even so, the Old Town gets busy in summer.

  • Peak hours are 10:00 to 15:00. That is when the Stradun and the wall entrances are at their busiest. If you are ashore early, start with the walls; if late, save the Stradun for the end of the day.
  • The walls run one way. You walk the walls in a single direction, and there are several entrances: by the Pile Gate, by the Ploče Gate and by St John's Fortress above the Old Port. Buying tickets online in advance saves time; bring water and a hat.
  • Old Town rules. Walking around the centre in swimwear or without a shirt can get you fined. Beachwear is for the beach.
  • You cannot see the walls from Gruž. The port sits in its own inlet behind the Lapad peninsula, with a large cable-stayed bridge above it. You may see the walls from the sea as the ship arrives or leaves, if it passes the Old Town — be on deck in good time.

On your own or on a ship's excursion

The Old Town, the walls, the cable car and Lokrum are all easy to do on your own: city buses run from Gruž, and the rest is on foot or by boat from the Old Port. If Dubrovnik itself is your plan, you do not need an excursion.

A ship's excursion makes more sense if you want to go further: Ston with its long walls and oyster beds, the Elaphiti Islands, Cavtat, Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina or Kotor in Montenegro. The last two mean a non-EU border each way and a long drive, and the queue at the crossing can take an hour. The ship will usually wait for its own excursions if they run late — it will not wait for independent passengers.

If your itinerary includes Kotor too, see Kotor in a day — the two ports often feature on the same cruise.

How to be back on board in time

  • The way back to Gruž. In the afternoon there are queues at the stops by the Pile Gate, and traffic on the road to Gruž. Leave the Old Town at least an hour and a half before all-aboard time.
  • Your bus stop. Note where you were dropped off and where the bus or shuttle back leaves from — there are several stops around Pile. Tickets from a kiosk are usually cheaper than from the driver.
  • Tenders. If the ship is at anchor, queues build at the Old Port towards the end of the call. Be at the landing at least an hour before all-aboard time.
  • Lokrum and Srđ with a margin. Lokrum boats run to a timetable, and the cable car stops in strong wind. Do not leave them for your last hour.
  • Take with you. Your cruise card, the document your cruise line asked for, some cash in euros, water and a phone with the ship's emergency number.

Where cruises calling here start

Dubrovnik is one of the main calls on Adriatic and Eastern Mediterranean itineraries — from Italy towards Greece or the other way round, sometimes together with Kotor and Split. If you would like a cruise that calls here, look at these departure ports:

Common questions

Where do cruise ships berth in Dubrovnik?

Most often at the piers of Gruž port, about 3 km north-west of the Old Town. Smaller ships sometimes anchor off the Old Town and tender passengers straight into the Old Port. The ship will tell you the day before which applies to your call.

How do I get from Gruž port to the Old Town?

By city bus from the stop by the port to the Pile Gate in 10 to 20 minutes, or by cruise line shuttle or taxi in 10 to 15 minutes, longer at peak times. Walking takes about 35 to 45 minutes along a busy road, which is tiring in the heat. Bus tickets are easiest to buy at a kiosk.

Do I need a passport or visa to go ashore in Dubrovnik?

Croatia has been in the EU and Schengen since 2023. If your ship comes from another Schengen port, there is usually no separate check; if it comes from outside Schengen, Montenegro for example, passport checks take place on board or at the port. EU citizens usually just need a passport or national ID card; for other passports, check the rules in advance.

How long does it take to walk the city walls?

The full circuit is about 2 km, walked in one direction, and takes an hour and a half to two hours with stops. There is hardly any shade, so go in the morning and take water. There is an entry charge, and tickets are easiest to buy online in advance.

Will I have time to visit Lokrum?

Yes, if your call is longer than six hours. Boats leave the Old Port and take about 15 minutes, and you should allow two to three hours on the island. Check the time of the last boat back and do not leave Lokrum until the very end of the day.

When is the Old Town least crowded?

Early in the morning and towards the evening. It is busiest roughly between 10:00 and 15:00, when cruise passengers and tour groups are in town. If you are ashore early, start with the walls and keep the Stradun and the cafés for later.

How the club fits in

Cruises calling at Dubrovnik that are available in the club work on the same terms as any other route. You choose one way to pay per booking: the member price (INsider Pricing), roughly 17% below the listed price, or your Reward Points, which can cover up to half of the cruise price. They do not add up. To pay up to 100% with points, you need to have accumulated enough points and book 270 days or more before departure.

Not every cruise line can be booked through the club: check the specific sailing in the club's search, or ask us and we will tell you which itineraries calling at Dubrovnik are available in the month you have in mind.
