Cruises From Kuşadası: the Greek Islands From the Gateway to Ephesus

Kuşadası is a resort town on Türkiye's Aegean coast, best known as the port for ancient Ephesus. Its cruise port sits right in the town centre, and from March to November short cruises leave from here for the Greek islands — Mykonos, Patmos, Santorini, Rhodes and Crete. It is a rare chance to combine Türkiye and Greece in three or four nights.

In short

Kuşadası is a cruise port on Türkiye's Aegean coast: Ege Port is right in the town centre. Most people fly to İzmir and travel on about 80 km — around 1 hour 15 minutes by transfer. Sailings run from March to November, busiest in May and June, and are mostly short 3–4-night Greek island cruises, plus some 7-night ones.

Why Kuşadası

  • A port in the middle of town. From the Ege Port piers it is a few steps to the old caravanserai and the bazaar, and Pigeon Island is a 10–15-minute walk along the waterfront.
  • Türkiye and Greece in one trip. Short cruises link Kuşadası with Mykonos, Patmos, Santorini and other islands — two countries in three or four nights.
  • Ephesus next door. One of the best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean is about 20 km away — easy to see the day before you board.
  • A long, warm season. Sailings from March to November, and sea-swimming weather from June to October.

Where cruises from Kuşadası go

Almost every sailing heads across the Aegean to the Greek islands. Most are short, and often it is the same cruise that starts near Athens — you simply join it in Türkiye. These are the main options:

Good to know: on short cruises the ship arrives in Kuşadası from Greece early in the morning and stays until around midday. Boarding here is in the morning, not the afternoon as in big home ports — so spend the night before in Kuşadası. How one-way cruises work →

Getting to the port

Kuşadası's cruise port is Ege Port, on the seafront in the town centre, opposite a 17th-century caravanserai and next to the bazaar. Ships berth at its piers, and the town starts as soon as you leave the terminal. Your boarding documents show your boarding time.

  • From the Netherlands and Belgium. The nearest big airport is İzmir Adnan Menderes. There are direct flights from Amsterdam and Brussels, about three and a half hours, with more in summer; from Eindhoven you usually change, for example in Istanbul. Fly in the day before.
  • From İzmir airport. Kuşadası is about 80 km away: around 1 hour 15 minutes by pre-booked transfer or taxi. Havaş airport buses run to Kuşadası bus station (otogar) in 1.5–2 hours, and from there the port is a few minutes by taxi.
  • By train and minibus. The İZBAN commuter train runs from the airport towards Selçuk with a change at Tepeköy, and from Selçuk a dolmuş minibus reaches Kuşadası in about half an hour. Allow 2.5–3 hours in total — only worth it with light luggage.
  • Via Bodrum. Milas-Bodrum airport is about 120 km away, 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours by car. Handy if the flight times suit you better.
  • Or board in Athens. Most short cruises that call at Kuşadası also start near Athens. If flights to Athens work better for you, you can board the same cruise there.
Good to know: itineraries sometimes list the port as "Kuşadası (Ephesus)" — it is the same Ege Port. Ephesus itself lies inland, about 20 km away, and ships do not dock there.

Getting there

Check your boarding documents for your terminal or pier: each route leads to the one named in its row.

The night before: where to stay

Boarding in Kuşadası is usually in the morning, and İzmir airport is more than an hour away. A night here takes all the risk out of it: in the morning you walk to the port or take a short taxi ride — and you can spend the afternoon before at Ephesus.

Closest to the port

Town centre and Kaleiçi

Small hotels in the old quarter and on the seafront by the caravanserai. The port is a 5–10-minute walk away, though some lanes are steep.

Sea views and evening strolls

The marina and the promenade

North of the port along the water: hotels with views over the bay, cafés and the yacht marina. 10–20 minutes on foot or a couple of minutes by taxi.

A beach before the cruise

Ladies Beach

The best-known town beach, about 3 km south of the centre, with hotels right by the sand. About 10 minutes to the port by taxi.

Ephesus first

Selçuk

A small town next to Ephesus and the Basilica of St John, with a railway station. 20–30 minutes to the port by taxi in the morning.

If you have half a day in Kuşadası

The town sights are within walking distance of the port; for Ephesus you need a taxi or a tour:

  • Pigeon Island (Güvercinada). A small island with a medieval fortress, linked to the shore by a causeway — 10–15 minutes' walk south of the port, with views of the ships at the pier.
  • The caravanserai and the bazaar. A 17th-century Ottoman caravanserai stands right opposite the port, and the covered bazaar and the old lanes of Kaleiçi start behind it. Haggling is normal here.
  • Ephesus. About 20 km away, 25–30 minutes by taxi: the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and the marble streets of a Roman city. Allow 2–3 hours, and in summer go early — there is little shade.
  • The House of the Virgin Mary. A small stone house on a wooded hill above Ephesus, revered as Mary's last home and visited by Christians and Muslims alike. It is usually combined with Ephesus.
  • Şirince. A hillside village of white houses above Selçuk, known for its fruit wines — about 40 minutes by car from Kuşadası.

The day you come back

Short cruises usually reach Kuşadası early in the morning, and guests leave before the new ones board — by mid-morning at the latest. İzmir airport is about 1 hour 15 minutes away, so a flight from early afternoon is realistic, and an evening flight leaves time for Ephesus, which is almost on the way to the airport. If you boarded near Athens and leave the ship in Kuşadası, or the other way round, check which city you are flying home from.

Practical tips

  • Two sets of entry rules. Türkiye is not in Schengen, but the ship calls at Greek islands. Dutch and Belgian citizens do not need a visa for a short trip to Türkiye; other passports may need a Turkish e-Visa as well as a Schengen visa. Apply for an e-Visa only on the Turkish government's website. Documents and visas → Do you need a visa for your cruise? →
  • Kuşadası or Athens? Many cruises can be joined in either port. Compare flights and hotel nights before you choose — and make sure your booking names the port where you actually board.
  • Check your boarding time. The ship is only in Kuşadası for a few hours: missing your slot means missing the cruise.
  • Turkish lira. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but keep some cash in lira for the dolmuş, small cafés and the bazaar.
  • Heat at Ephesus. In July and August the ruins can reach 35°C with hardly any shade. A hat, water and an early start make all the difference.

Rather start in Athens?

The same short Aegean cruises also leave from the Athens area, and there are more flights there from the Netherlands and Belgium. Cruises from Athens-Piraeus →

Common questions

Which cruises leave from Kuşadası?

Mostly short cruises of 3–4 nights to the Greek islands — Mykonos, Patmos, Santorini, sometimes Rhodes and Crete — from March to November. From May to October there are also some 7-night sailings, and at the end of the season the odd long one-way voyage.

Where is the cruise port in Kuşadası?

Ege Port is on the seafront in the town centre, opposite the old caravanserai and the bazaar. Pigeon Island is a 10–15-minute walk away. On short cruises, boarding is usually in the morning.

How do I get from İzmir airport to Kuşadası?

It is about 80 km: around 1 hour 15 minutes by transfer or taxi. Havaş airport buses go to Kuşadası bus station in 1.5–2 hours, and the slowest option is the İZBAN train to Selçuk and a minibus from there.

Where should I stay the night before a cruise from Kuşadası?

Closest is the town centre and the old Kaleiçi quarter, a few minutes' walk from the port. The marina and promenade suit evening strolls, Ladies Beach a last swim, and Selçuk is the choice if you want to see Ephesus first.

Do I need a visa for a cruise from Kuşadası?

It depends on your passport. Dutch and Belgian citizens do not need a visa for a short stay in Türkiye. The ship also calls at Greek islands in Schengen, so other passports may need both a Turkish e-Visa and a Schengen visa — check in good time.

Can I see Ephesus before or after the cruise?

Yes. Ephesus is about 20 km from the port, 25–30 minutes by taxi. Go the afternoon before you board, or on your last day on the way to İzmir airport — it is almost on the way.

How the club fits in

Cruises from Kuşadası that are available in the club work on the same terms as any other route. You choose one way to pay per booking: the member price (INsider Pricing), roughly 17% below the listed price, or your Reward Points, which can cover up to half of the cruise price.
