In short
Kuşadası: ships berth at Ege Port in the town centre, no tendering — the bazaar is across the road. The day is mostly about Ephesus, 20 km away: 25–30 minutes by taxi or about half an hour by dolmuş towards Selçuk. Four hours covers Ephesus; six adds the House of the Virgin Mary; a full day adds Selçuk and Şirince.

Where do cruise ships berth in Kuşadası, and how do you get into town?
At the piers of Ege Port, right in the town centre — there is no tendering here, the ship ties up alongside. From the terminal the waterfront, the bazaar and the old caravanserai are a couple of minutes on foot. But the real draw of this port is not the town: it is ancient Ephesus, about 20 km away, which means a taxi, a dolmuş minibus or a tour.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where the ship berths | Ege Port Kuşadası — two long piers with several berths in the town centre, with room for up to four large ships at once. Itineraries sometimes list it as "Kuşadası (Ephesus)" — it is the same port. |
| Into town | Straight away on foot: from the terminal through the Scala Nuova shopping arcade to the seafront; the 17th-century caravanserai and the way into the bazaar are just across the road. Pigeon Island (Güvercinada) is 10–15 minutes along the water. |
| To Ephesus | About 20 km, 25–30 minutes by taxi — cars wait at the port exit. A dolmuş towards Selçuk takes about half an hour from the town centre to the "Efes" stop, from where the Lower Gate is about 1 km on foot. |
| Typical call | Usually 6–9 hours. On short Aegean cruises the ship arrives early in the morning and leaves around midday, as Kuşadası is also a start port for them. Exact times are in the daily programme. |
| Time zone | Türkiye keeps the same time all year. From late March to late October it matches Greece; in winter it is one hour ahead. Go by the ship's time announced on board. |
| Money and language | Turkish lira. Cards are taken almost everywhere and the bazaar often accepts euros, but you need lira in cash for the dolmuş and small cafés. Turkish; English gets you by easily at the port, the bazaar and Ephesus. |
| Documents | Türkiye is in neither the EU nor Schengen, so there is always a passport check — usually arranged by your cruise line on board or in the terminal. Under Turkish rules, passengers who arrive and leave by sea can generally stay up to 72 hours in the port city and neighbouring provinces without a visa. Carry the document your cruise line asks for — here that is often your passport (what to check, do you need a visa?). |
| All aboard | Usually 30–60 minutes before departure. Allow at least 45 minutes to get back from Ephesus, and at least an hour if you are up in Şirince. |

What can you fit into a day in port in Kuşadası?
Almost everyone goes ashore for Ephesus: the ancient city itself takes 2–2.5 hours, about 4 with the journey. The longer the call, the more you can add — the House of the Virgin Mary, Selçuk with the Basilica of St John, the village of Şirince. Kuşadası itself, with its island fortress and bazaar, fits into the last hour or so, or a second visit.
Ephesus, top to bottom
A taxi to the Upper (Magnesian) Gate takes about 30 minutes. From there the whole city runs downhill: the Odeon, Curetes Street, the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre, which seated some 25,000, then out through the Lower Gate, where your car is waiting. That way you never climb uphill in the heat. Allow 2–2.5 hours for Ephesus itself.
Ephesus, the Terrace Houses and Mary's House
Add the Terrace Houses — Roman villas under a roof, with mosaics and frescoes: a separate ticket and about 45 minutes more. The House of the Virgin Mary is 5.5 km above the Upper Gate on wooded Bülbüldağı hill; no public transport goes there, only taxis and tours. It is a small stone chapel with a spring, a place of pilgrimage for Christians and Muslims alike.
Selçuk and Şirince — on a call of 8–9 hours or more
After Ephesus, head into Selçuk: the Basilica of St John on Ayasuluk Hill and the lone column of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. From there it is 8 km into the hills to Şirince, a village of white houses and red roofs known for its fruit wines — a good place for lunch. Back to Kuşadası is about 40 minutes by car.
Kuşadası on foot
Pigeon Island and its medieval fortress are linked to the shore by a causeway about 350 m long — the best view of the ships at the pier. The Öküz Mehmet Paşa caravanserai of 1618, opposite the port, is now a hotel; behind it start the covered bazaar and the lanes of the old Kaleiçi quarter. Ladies Beach (Kadınlar Denizi) is about 3 km south, 10 minutes by taxi.

How do you see Ephesus on one call — without wilting?
Ephesus is one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Mediterranean and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But in high season there can be three or four ships in port, all heading to the same place at the same time. A few rules make the day much better.
- Enter at the top. Ephesus has two gates, Upper and Lower, with about 1.5 km of marble streets running downhill between them. A taxi can drop you at the Upper Gate and pick you up at the Lower one — agree this in advance.
- Arrive at opening time. The first hour is the quietest. By mid-morning the coaches from the ships arrive one after another, and the Library of Celsus gets crowded.
- Heat and shade. There is hardly any shade at Ephesus, and summer can reach 35°C. A hat, water and closed shoes with a good grip are a must: the polished marble is slippery.
- Tickets. Ephesus and the Terrace Houses have separate tickets, sold at the gates, and Türkiye's museum passes are valid here too. Opening hours change with the season — check the day before.
- The House of the Virgin Mary. Covered shoulders and knees are appreciated. The road up is a winding mountain one: allow about an hour for the drive and the house with its spring.
On your own or on a ship's excursion?
Ephesus is perfectly doable on your own. The easiest way is a taxi from the port exit: drivers offer a round trip with waiting time, so agree the route and the return time before you set off. The dolmuş is the simplest public transport, but from the stop you walk about 1 km to the Lower Gate and then climb uphill through the site. Licensed guides can be found right at the gates.
A ship's excursion makes more sense on a short call, if you want Ephesus, Mary's House and Şirince in one go without negotiating with drivers, or if you are travelling in the heat with children or older parents. The ship generally waits for its own excursions if they run late — it does not wait for independent passengers. Bear in mind that tours often include a stop at a carpet or leather workshop; you are under no obligation to buy.
How do you make sure you are back on board in Kuşadası?
- Ship's time. In winter, clocks in Türkiye are an hour ahead of Greece. Count all-aboard by the time announced on the ship, and check that your phone shows the same.
- Agree terms with your driver. Give an exact time you need to be back at the port and take the driver's number. If you are going to Mary's House and Şirince, leave at least an hour to spare.
- The dolmuş needs a margin. Minibuses run often, but on hot days and at busy times they can be full. Spend the last hour of your call in town rather than at Ephesus.
- Traffic in the centre. The seafront road by the port is busy in summer. If you are at Ladies Beach, set off earlier than you think you need to.
- What to take. Your cruise card, the document your cruise line asked for, a hat, water, comfortable shoes, a little cash in lira and a phone with the ship's emergency number.
