A day in port

Ibiza in a Day From Your Cruise Ship: What You Can Really Fit In

Ibiza greets your ship with a view rather than a club beat: across the bay, the walls of Dalt Vila climb the hill to the cathedral on top. The old town is a short boat ride from the berth, the beaches are close and Formentera is half an hour away by ferry, so the day is easy to plan on your own.

In short

Ibiza: most ships berth at Botafoc, across the bay from the old town — about 3 km by road. The boat from Marina Botafoch, a bus or a taxi gets you across in 10–15 minutes. Four hours covers Dalt Vila, the cathedral and La Marina; a full day adds the Puig des Molins necropolis, a beach or Formentera.

Where do cruise ships berth in Ibiza, and how do you get into the old town?

Across the bay from the old town. Most ships tie up at the long Botafoc breakwater on the east side of the harbour: Dalt Vila, with its walls and cathedral, is in full view from the deck, but about 3 km away by road. A smaller ship is sometimes given a berth in the old harbour, right below the walls. Tenders are rare here.

QuestionAnswer
Where the ship berthsAt the Botafoc breakwater (dic de Botafoc), where most ships tie up; occasionally a smaller ship berths in the old harbour by La Marina, below Dalt Vila. Yours is in the daily programme.
Into town from BotafocBy boat: the City Boat harbour ferry runs from Marina Botafoch, 10–15 minutes on foot from the ship, to the town waterfront, roughly every 30 minutes in season. By road: the PortBus, the ship's shuttle if one is offered, or a taxi, 10–15 minutes. On foot: 35–45 minutes around the bay, flat but with little shade.
From the old harbourLa Marina is right by the quay; the Portal de ses Taules, the main gate into Dalt Vila, is about 10 minutes on foot.
Typical callThe season runs roughly from April to October. Calls here often start around midday or in the afternoon and run into the evening, sometimes until midnight or later; others are classic 8–10-hour daytime calls. Exact times are in the daily programme.
Time, money and languageCentral European Time, as in the Netherlands and mainland Spain. Euro; cards are accepted almost everywhere. Spanish and Catalan (the local variety is called Ibizan, eivissenc); English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
DocumentsSpain is in the EU and Schengen. On a Mediterranean cruise from Schengen ports there is usually no separate check. Carry the document your cruise line asks for (what to check).
All aboardUsually 30–60 minutes before departure. Allow 30–40 minutes from the old town back to Botafoc, and more when several ships are in and the taxi rank has a queue. From Formentera, be back in Ibiza at least 1.5–2 hours before all aboard.

What can you fit into a day in port in Ibiza?

Ibiza is more than nightlife. The heart of the town is Dalt Vila, the walled old town on the hill and part of the UNESCO World Heritage site «Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture». The walls, the cathedral and the harbour quarters below fit into 3–4 hours; on a longer call, add the Phoenician necropolis, a beach or a ferry to Formentera.

3–4 hours

Dalt Vila and the cathedral

Cross to the town and enter Dalt Vila through the Portal de ses Taules, the 16th-century main gate between two bastions. Climb the cobbled lanes and the Renaissance walls to the cathedral square at the top: the cathedral itself is a short visit, and the terrace looks over the harbour, your ship at Botafoc and, on a clear day, Formentera. Come down through Sa Penya and La Marina, the old fishermen's and harbour quarters. The climb is steep, so wear proper shoes.

5–6 hours

Puig des Molins and Vara de Rey

Add the Puig des Molins necropolis, 10–15 minutes on foot from the old-town gate: a hillside with thousands of Phoenician and Punic tombs from the 7th century BC onwards, and a small museum (closed on Mondays — check the hours; the Archaeological Museum up in Dalt Vila is closed for works). Then stroll along Passeig de Vara de Rey, the town's main avenue, and have lunch in the streets around the Mercat Vell, the old market.

Full day

Formentera by ferry

Fast ferries from Ibiza Town's port reach La Savina on Formentera in about 30–35 minutes, many times a day in season. From La Savina, a short bus or taxi ride takes you to Ses Illetes, a strip of white sand and turquoise water often compared with the Caribbean. The clarity comes from the Posidonia seagrass meadows, protected as part of the same UNESCO site. Book a return with plenty of time before all aboard.

If you have been before

Ses Salines and Talamanca

Ses Salines Natural Park, about 20 minutes south by taxi and a little longer by bus, combines working salt pans, a protected wetland and a long sandy beach. Prefer to stay near the ship? Talamanca beach is about 25 minutes on foot from Botafoc, with shallow water and restaurants along the promenade. And on an evening call, go back up to Dalt Vila at sunset, when the day visitors have gone.

Botafoc or the old harbour — and how to use an evening in Ibiza?

In Ibiza, your berth decides how you cross the bay, and the call times decide whether you see the old town by day or by night. Check both in the daily programme.

  • Botafoc. The cruise berths on the long breakwater east of the harbour. Your ship faces Dalt Vila across the water, but the road around the bay is about 3 km. The quickest way across is usually the boat from Marina Botafoch; a bus or taxi takes 10–15 minutes.
  • The old harbour. Smaller ships occasionally berth inside the harbour, by La Marina. Then you step off straight into the harbour quarter, with Dalt Vila right above you.
  • An evening call. Many ships stay into the evening, and that is the best time for Dalt Vila: the heat eases, the walls glow in the low sun and the harbour lights come on below. Restaurants in La Marina and on the old-town squares fill up after 8 pm — Spain dines late.
  • Nightlife, honestly. The big-name clubs are mostly in Platja d'en Bossa and Sant Antoni, with a few by the marinas, and get going well after midnight. That rarely fits with all aboard; harbour bars and old-town terraces are the realistic version.
  • Sail-away. Be on deck as the ship leaves the harbour: the walls of Dalt Vila and the cathedral on top are in full view, and on a clear day Formentera is on the horizon.

On your own or on a ship's excursion?

Ibiza Town is easy on your own: the boat or a bus gets you across the bay, and Dalt Vila, Sa Penya, La Marina and Puig des Molins are all on foot. For Formentera, fast ferries leave from the town port; buy a return and check the times before you go.

A ship's excursion makes more sense if you want to see the island's interior and west coast in one go — the Es Vedrà viewpoint, Ses Salines, villages such as Santa Gertrudis — or a trip to Formentera with the transfers arranged. The ship generally waits for its own excursions if they run late — it does not wait for independent passengers.

How do you make sure you are back on board in Ibiza?

  • Remember your berth. Botafoc and the old harbour are on opposite sides of the bay, and a taxi driver needs the exact name.
  • Check the last boat. The timetable of the boat from town to Marina Botafoch changes through the season. Look up the last convenient crossing at the kiosk on your way into town.
  • Taxi queues. When several ships are in, or late in the evening, the taxi rank can have a long queue. Head back earlier than you think you need to.
  • Formentera. Return ferries fill up in high season, and a choppy sea can delay them. Pick a return that gets you back at least 1.5–2 hours before all aboard.
  • What to take. Your cruise card, the document your cruise line asked for, sun protection and water — in summer the walls and the Botafoc walk get very hot — shoes that grip on smooth cobbles, swimwear if you plan a beach, and a phone with the ship's emergency number.

Where do cruises calling at Ibiza start?

Ibiza is a port of call: ships stop here for the day or the evening on Western Mediterranean itineraries, and you board in another port. Departure ports:

Often on the same itinerary: Palma de Mallorca in a day, Cartagena in a day and Cagliari in a day.

Common questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Ibiza?

Most ships berth at the Botafoc breakwater on the east side of the harbour, across the bay from the old town of Dalt Vila — about 3 km by road. Smaller ships are sometimes given a berth in the old harbour by La Marina. Tenders are rare. Your berth is in the daily programme.

How do you get from Botafoc to the old town?

The quickest way is usually the harbour boat from Marina Botafoch, 10–15 minutes on foot from the ship; in season it runs roughly every 30 minutes. Otherwise, take the PortBus, the ship's shuttle if one is offered, or a taxi, about 10–15 minutes.

Can you walk from the Ibiza cruise port to Dalt Vila?

Yes: around the bay it is 35–45 minutes on a flat waterfront, but with little shade. In summer heat it is better to take the boat or a bus and save your energy for the climb to the cathedral — the streets of Dalt Vila are steep and cobbled.

What can I see in Ibiza in 4 hours from a cruise ship?

In 4 hours in Ibiza you can see Dalt Vila — the Portal de ses Taules, the walls and the cathedral square with its viewing terrace — and walk down through Sa Penya and La Marina. Keep Puig des Molins, a beach and Formentera for a call of 6 hours or more.

Can I visit Formentera on a port day in Ibiza?

Yes, on a call of 7–8 hours or more. Fast ferries from Ibiza Town's port take about 30–35 minutes to La Savina. Pick a return that gets you back at least 1.5–2 hours before all aboard: ferries fill up in summer, and a choppy sea can delay them.

Is Ibiza worth it if I am not into nightlife?

Yes. Ibiza Town is above all the UNESCO-listed fortress of Dalt Vila, a Phoenician necropolis, old harbour quarters and beaches. The big clubs are mostly outside the old town and open late at night, so they hardly overlap with a day in port.

How the club fits in

Cruises calling at Ibiza that are available in the club work on the same terms as any other route. You choose one way to pay per booking: the member price (INsider Pricing), roughly 17% below the listed price, or your Reward Points, which can cover up to half of the cruise price. They do not add up. To pay up to 100% with points, you need to have accumulated enough points and book 270 days or more before departure.

Not every cruise line can be booked through the club: check the specific sailing in the club's search, or ask us and we will tell you which itineraries calling at Ibiza are available in the month you have in mind.
