In short
Costa Maya: ships dock at the Puerto Costa Maya pier, 3 km north of the village of Mahahual; tenders are rare. Allow 10–15 minutes from the ship to the port exit, then 5–10 by taxi to the Mahahual malecón. Four hours covers the beach and malecón, five to six Chacchoben, a full day Bacalar lagoon. Ashore: UTC−5 all year.
Where do cruise ships berth in Costa Maya, and how do you get to Mahahual?
At its own cruise pier, Puerto Costa Maya: the port was built in 2001 especially for cruise ships, 3 km north of the fishing village of Mahahual. Ships dock right at the pier, so tenders are rare. You step off into the port's shopping “village” with its pools, and for the beach and the Mahahual waterfront you take a taxi — 5–10 minutes.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where the ship berths | At the Y-shaped pier of Puerto Costa Maya, where up to four ships can dock at once, including the largest. Passengers are only tendered when every berth is taken. Your berth is in the daily programme. |
| From the ship to the port exit | 10–15 minutes on foot along the pier and through the shopping village — the route to the exit winds past the shops. A small shuttle usually runs along the pier. |
| To Mahahual | A taxi takes 5–10 minutes to the lighthouse at the start of the malecón; the rank is at the port exit. Agree the fare before you get in. On foot it is about 3 km along the road — 40–45 minutes in full sun, which is not much fun in the heat. |
| Typical call | Usually 7–10 hours, from morning until mid-afternoon. Ships call all year, most of them from November to April. Exact times are in the daily programme. |
| Time zone | The state of Quintana Roo is on UTC−5 all year and does not change its clocks. Ship's time depends on the home port and the season and may be an hour different. Check which clock the all-aboard time refers to. |
| Money and language | Mexican peso; US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, but change often comes in pesos, and a “$” on a price tag usually means pesos. Mahahual has few cash machines, and they sometimes run dry — bring small notes. Spanish; English is spoken at the port and along the malecón. |
| Documents | Mexico is outside the EU and Schengen. Passengers who go ashore for the day and re-board the same ship generally do not need a Mexican visa. Cruises calling at Costa Maya usually start in the US, so US entry rules apply to the cruise itself — a visa or ESTA, depending on your passport (what to check, which visa you need for a cruise). |
| All aboard | Usually 30–60 minutes before departure. From Mahahual, allow 30–40 minutes including the taxi queue and the walk through the port; from Chacchoben, at least an hour and a half; from Bacalar, at least two hours. |
What can you fit into a day in port in Costa Maya?
Costa Maya is not a city but a quiet stretch of coast in southern Quintana Roo: the port, the village of Mahahual with its seafront promenade, and a reef running along the whole shore. Three to four hours is enough for the beach and the malecón, five to six for the Maya ruins of Chacchoben, and a full day for Bacalar lagoon.
Mahahual and the malecón
The taxi drops you by the lighthouse at the start of the malecón, a pedestrian promenade of about 1.7 km along the beach, lined with cafés, stalls and beach clubs. The reef runs just offshore, so the water by the beach is usually calm. Beaches in Mexico are open to everyone; loungers and umbrellas belong to the clubs and restaurants and usually come with an order. If you would rather stay put, the port village has large pools, and several times a day the voladores perform: four men “fly” down on ropes from a tall pole.
The Chacchoben ruins
A Maya city in the forest about 70 km from the port, roughly an hour each way by road. A loop trail takes you past three restored pyramids; you cannot climb the tallest temple, but traces of red paint survive on some walls, protected by shade roofs. The site opened to visitors in 2002. Allow about 4 hours including the drive, and bring water and insect repellent.
Bacalar lagoon
The “lagoon of seven colours”, shading from turquoise to deep blue, is about an hour and a half by road each way. In the small town of Bacalar stands the 18th-century Fort San Felipe with its piracy museum, and at the southern edge Cenote Azul, a deep, round sinkhole of clear water right by the lagoon. Plan on 7–8 hours: only on a long call, and easier with a ship's excursion.
The reef by boat, and Xcalak
Boats leave Mahahual beach for snorkelling trips to the reef, and dive shops on the malecón run dives too. On a long call, head south along the coast road to Xcalak, a fishing village near the Belize border about 60 km away: the Arrecifes de Xcalak marine national park, empty beaches and mangroves. The drive takes a little over an hour each way.

The port village or Mahahual — and what should you know about the sea here?
The main decision of the day is whether to stay in the port or head into the village. And in Costa Maya a few things about the sea are worth knowing in advance: the reef, the wind and the season decide a lot.
- The port village. Shops, a craft market, restaurants, pools with a swim-up bar and a square where the voladores perform. Handy with children and on a short call, but the port has no beach for swimming in the sea.
- Mahahual. A village of a few streets and the malecón, with more of everyday Mexico, seafood cafés and fewer crowds than the port — especially in the morning. After midday, with several ships in port, it gets busy.
- The reef and swimming. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef runs along the coast, and the water between it and the beach is calm. The seabed is rocky and weedy in places, so water shoes help. Marine parks ask for biodegradable sunscreen.
- Sargassum. In spring and summer, brown seaweed often washes up along the Mexican Caribbean coast. Mahahual's beaches are cleaned and parts of the shore have barriers, but on some days swimming is unpleasant.
- Wind and hurricanes. The coast is exposed to the open sea: in strong winds the captain may cancel the call. Hurricane season runs from June to November. In August 2007, Hurricane Dean, a category 5 storm, destroyed most of Mahahual and damaged the pier; the port reopened in 2008, and the village was rebuilt together with today's malecón.
On your own or on a ship's excursion?
Mahahual is easy to do on your own: taxis wait at the port exit, the ride is short and the malecón is walkable. Agree the fare before you set off, and check where drivers pick passengers up for the return — usually by the lighthouse.
A ship's excursion makes more sense for anything further inland: Chacchoben, Bacalar or the Kohunlich ruins deeper in the interior. They are an hour or more away by highway, and the ship generally waits for its own excursions if they run late — it does not wait for independent passengers. If you do take a taxi to Chacchoben, agree the waiting time and the return trip in advance.
How do you make sure you are back on board in Costa Maya?
- Check the clocks. Ashore it is UTC−5 all year, while the ship may keep the time of its home port. Go by the all-aboard time in the daily programme and check which clock it refers to.
- Allow for the walk through the port. From the gate to the ship is another 10–15 minutes through the village and along the pier. Do not plan to reach the port gate at the last minute.
- The taxi queue. In the afternoon, passengers from several ships gather by the lighthouse in Mahahual. Head back early.
- Longer trips need a margin. Chacchoben and especially Bacalar mean highway driving, roadworks and occasional checkpoints. Build in plenty of time, or choose the ship's excursion.
- What to take. Your cruise card, the document your cruise line asked for, water, a hat, biodegradable sunscreen, insect repellent for the ruins, some cash in small notes and a phone with the ship's emergency number.
Where do cruises calling at Costa Maya start?
Costa Maya is a port of call: usually one stop on a week-long Western Caribbean cruise from Florida or from Gulf of Mexico ports such as Galveston, New Orleans and Tampa. Departure ports:
- Cruises from Miami — week-long Western Caribbean sailings, often calling at Costa Maya.
- Cruises from Fort Lauderdale — Western Caribbean itineraries of 6–8 nights.
- Cruises from Port Canaveral — Western Caribbean sailings all year.
- Miami or Fort Lauderdale? and Miami or Port Canaveral? — the start ports compared.
For the whole region, see Caribbean cruises. Often on the same itinerary: Cozumel in a day and Grand Cayman in a day.
Common questions
Where do cruise ships dock in Costa Maya?
At the Puerto Costa Maya cruise pier, about 3 km north of the village of Mahahual. The pier is Y-shaped and up to four ships can dock at once, so tenders are rare — only when every berth is taken. Your berth is in the daily programme.
Can you walk from the Costa Maya cruise port to Mahahual?
You can, but it is about 3 km along the road — 40–45 minutes in sun and heat. Most people take a taxi: 5–10 minutes to the lighthouse at the start of the malecón. Add another 10–15 minutes from the ship to the port exit, along the pier and through the shopping village.
What can I see in Costa Maya in 4 hours from a cruise ship?
In 4 hours you can get to Mahahual, walk the malecón and swim off the beach in the shelter of the reef. Or stay in the port: pools, a craft market and the voladores performance. Keep the Chacchoben ruins and Bacalar lagoon for a longer call.
How far is Chacchoben from Costa Maya?
About 70 km, roughly an hour each way by road. Including a walk around the three restored pyramids, the trip takes about 4 hours. Climbing the pyramids is not allowed. It is easiest on a ship's excursion or by taxi with an agreed waiting time.
Can you visit Bacalar lagoon from Costa Maya?
Yes, on a long call: the drive is about an hour and a half each way, and the whole trip takes 7–8 hours. Bacalar has the lagoon of seven colours, Fort San Felipe with its piracy museum, and Cenote Azul. Because of the distance, a ship's excursion is the safer choice.
Do I need a passport and visa to go ashore in Costa Maya?
Mexico is outside the EU and Schengen. Passengers who go ashore for the day and re-board the same ship generally do not need a Mexican visa. But cruises calling at Costa Maya usually start in the US, so US entry rules apply to the cruise itself. Take ashore the document your cruise line asks for.
How the club fits in
Cruises calling at Costa Maya that are available in the club work on the same terms as any other route. You choose one way to pay per booking: the member price (INsider Pricing), roughly 17% below the listed price, or your Reward Points, which can cover up to half of the cruise price. They do not add up. To pay up to 100% with points, you need to have accumulated enough points and book 270 days or more before departure.
Not every cruise line can be booked through the club: check the specific sailing in the club's search, or ask us and we will tell you which itineraries calling at Costa Maya are available in the month you have in mind.
