In short
Messina (for Taormina and Etna): ships berth in the city centre, 5–10 minutes' walk from the cathedral square and 10–15 from Messina Centrale station. Trains to Taormina-Giardini take 45–70 minutes, then a 10–15-minute bus up the hill. In a day you can do Taormina or Etna (best on an excursion) and the noon cathedral clock.
Where do cruise ships berth in Messina, and how far is the centre?
Ships tie up at piers right in central Messina, usually with no tendering. The cathedral square is 5–10 minutes on foot, the station 10–15 minutes along a level street.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where the ship berths | At the cruise piers in the city centre, along the waterfront. When several ships are in, your berth may be a little further along, but usually still within walking distance. |
| To the centre | Piazza del Duomo with the Orion Fountain is 5–10 minutes on foot. Messina Centrale station is 10–15 minutes on foot, by Piazza della Repubblica. |
| Taormina | About 50 km. Trains to Taormina-Giardini take 45–70 minutes, usually 1–2 an hour; from the station a bus takes 10–15 minutes up into town, or take a taxi. Intercity buses are slower and less frequent. |
| Etna | The usual visitor area is Rifugio Sapienza on the southern slope, at about 1,900 m. It is an hour and a half to two hours each way from Messina, and not realistic by public transport within a call. |
| Typical call | Usually 8–10 hours. Exact times are in the ship's daily programme. |
| Money and language | Euro; Italian. Cards are taken almost everywhere; cash helps in small bars. |
| Documents | Italy is in the EU and Schengen. If the ship comes from another Schengen port, there is usually no separate check; if it comes from outside Schengen, checks take place on board or at the port. Carry the document your cruise line asks for (what to check). |
| All aboard | Usually 30–60 minutes before departure. For a Taormina trip, plan your return train from this time. |
What can you fit into a day in Messina?
Taormina on your own fits comfortably into a normal call, Messina itself into 2–3 hours, and Etna only with an organised trip. Decide in advance whether you want to be at the cathedral at noon.
Messina and the noon clock
Piazza del Duomo, the 16th-century Orion Fountain and the cathedral bell tower with its astronomical clock, one of the largest in the world. At 12:00 sharp the show begins: figures move, a lion roars and a cockerel crows, for about 12 minutes. Then walk up to the Cristo Re church (15–20 minutes uphill) for views over the strait to Calabria.
Taormina on your own
Train to Taormina-Giardini, bus up to Piazza San Pancrazio, then stroll along the main street, Corso Umberto, to Piazza IX Aprile with its sea view. The highlight is the ancient theatre, with Etna in view on a clear day. Allow 3–4 hours for the town itself.
Etna — on an excursion
A coach to Rifugio Sapienza on the southern slope, a walk around the old Silvestri craters and, if you like, the cable car higher up. The summit craters can only be visited with a licensed guide. It is much colder up there than by the sea — bring a jacket and closed shoes.
Taormina and Isola Bella
From Piazza San Pancrazio in Taormina a cable car drops to the sea at Mazzarò in a few minutes; from there it is a short walk to the islet of Isola Bella on its pebble spit. Good for a summer swim — just keep the way back up and to the station in mind.
Can you get from Messina to Taormina on your own?
Yes — it is one of the easiest independent trips in the Mediterranean: the station is 10–15 minutes from the ship and the journey is under an hour to an hour and a half. The one catch is that Taormina sits on a cliff about 200 m above the sea, while the station is down below.
- The train. Messina Centrale to Taormina-Giardini takes 45–70 minutes, depending on the train. Paper tickets without a set time must be validated before boarding.
- From the station to town. The bus from the station to Piazza San Pancrazio takes 10–15 minutes; a taxi about 10. On foot it is about 30 minutes steeply uphill — tiring in the heat.
- Buses from Messina. Intercity buses take 50 minutes to 1 h 45 min and run less often — on a cruise call the train is more reliable.
- In Taormina. The ancient theatre, Corso Umberto, Piazza IX Aprile and the Villa Comunale gardens. It is busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon, when the tour groups arrive.
On your own or on a ship's excursion?
Messina and Taormina are easy to do on your own. Etna practically is not: there is no convenient transport, and it takes an hour and a half to two hours each way.
A ship's excursion makes more sense if you want Etna, Etna and Taormina in one day, or if the call is shorter than 7 hours. Excursion coaches to Taormina usually drop you at a car park below the old town, and you walk from there. The ship generally waits for its own excursions if they run late — it does not wait for independent passengers.
How do you make sure you are back on board in Messina?
- Return train with a margin. Be back at Messina Centrale at least an hour before all-aboard time: trains in Sicily can run late. Do not rely on the last train that would just work.
- Coming down from Taormina. Late in the day there can be a queue for the bus from San Pancrazio to the station. Start heading down at least half an hour before your train.
- Etna and the weather. Fog and wind are common up top, and the cable car sometimes stops. With an organised group that is the guide's job; do not try Etna on your own within a call.
- Strikes. Italy has transport strikes (sciopero) announced in advance. Check the day before whether one falls on your day.
- What to take. Your cruise card, the document your cruise line asked for, some cash in euros, water, a hat and a phone with the ship's emergency number.
The Strait of Messina: what to look out for from the deck
At its narrowest, the strait between Sicily and the mainland is about 3 km wide. As the ship arrives and leaves, go out on deck: Sicily on one side, the Calabrian coast with Scilla and Reggio Calabria on the other, and ferries crossing all the time. In ancient myth this was home to the sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis, feared by every sailor.

- Mediterranean cruises — seasons and routes in full.
