A day in port

Naples (for Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast) in a Day: What You Can Really Fit In

Naples is one of the few ports where the ship berths right in the city centre: from the gangway to Piazza Municipio is a few minutes' walk. It is also the closest port to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. There are more options than hours in the call, so the key is to pick one direction and not try to do it all.

In short

Naples (for Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast): ships berth at the Stazione Marittima in the centre, a 5-minute walk from Piazza Municipio and the metro. The metro and the Circumvesuviana train reach Pompeii in about an hour; the fast ferry to Capri takes around 50 minutes. Central Naples or Pompeii fit into a call; Amalfi is better on an excursion.

Where do cruise ships berth in Naples, and how do you get into town?

Ships tie up at the Stazione Marittima on the Molo Angioino pier, opposite Castel Nuovo, in the very centre. No shuttle is needed: you walk out of the terminal straight onto Piazza Municipio.

QuestionAnswer
Where the ship berthsAt the Stazione Marittima on Molo Angioino; on busy days some ships use neighbouring piers in the same harbour. Tenders are not usually needed. Your berth is in the daily programme.
To the centreRight outside: Piazza Municipio is about 5 minutes on foot, Municipio metro station (line 1) is across the road, Piazza del Plebiscito is 10–15 minutes and the old town about 20.
Pompeii and HerculaneumMetro line 1 to Garibaldi, about 10 minutes, then the Circumvesuviana suburban train: about 20 minutes to Ercolano Scavi, 35–40 minutes to Pompei Scavi. Including the change, Pompeii is about an hour away.
Capri and SorrentoFast ferries from the neighbouring Molo Beverello: about 50 minutes to Capri, under an hour to Sorrento. Sailings are cancelled in rough seas.
Typical callOften 8–10 hours, sometimes less. Exact times are in the ship's daily programme.
Money and languageEuro; Italian. Cards are taken almost everywhere; small pizzerias and markets are easier with cash.
DocumentsItaly is in the EU and Schengen. If the ship comes from another Schengen port, there is usually no separate check; if it comes from outside Schengen, checks take place on board or at the port. Pompeii tickets carry your name, so take a passport or ID card. Carry the document your cruise line asks for (what to check).
All aboardUsually 30–60 minutes before departure. For Pompeii or Capri, plan your return from this time, not from the sailing time.

What can you fit into a day from the Naples cruise port?

Naples alone easily fills half a day on foot: the main sights are 5–25 minutes from the pier. Pompeii fits into a normal call if you leave early. Capri and Amalfi are the riskiest options for timing.

3–4 hours

Central Naples on foot

From Castel Nuovo to the Galleria Umberto I, the San Carlo opera house and Piazza del Plebiscito with the Royal Palace (10–15 minutes). Then up Via Toledo into the old town: Spaccanapoli, San Gregorio Armeno with its nativity-scene workshops and the cathedral, 1.5–2 km from the port. Stop for pizza in one of the old pizzerias on the way.

5–6 hours

Pompeii

Metro to Garibaldi and the Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri; the entrance is by the station. Allow at least 3 hours for the ancient city. Tickets carry your name, so bring a passport; there is a daily cap of 20,000 visitors, so in season buy ahead.

4–5 hours

Herculaneum and the archaeological museum

Herculaneum is smaller than Pompeii and better preserved: two-storey houses, wooden beams, mosaics. About 20 minutes by train to Ercolano Scavi, then about 10 minutes downhill on foot. On the way back, the National Archaeological Museum (metro line 1 to Museo) holds frescoes from both cities; it is closed on Tuesdays.

If you have been before

Capri or Vesuvius

Capri: about 50 minutes by fast ferry from Molo Beverello, then the funicular up to Capri town. Summer brings queues for the ferry and funicular, and boats are cancelled in rough seas: only on a long call with a calm sea. The Vesuvius crater path uses timed tickets sold online; public transport is slow, so an excursion is easier.

Which pier your ship uses depends on the day: check the daily programme.

Can you get to Pompeii on your own from Naples?

Yes, it is a realistic plan on a call of 7–8 hours or more: about an hour each way, plus at least 3 hours at the site. Get off the ship as early as you can — mornings are cooler and more visitors are admitted in the first half of the day.

  • The journey. Metro line 1 from Municipio to Garibaldi (about 10 minutes), then the Circumvesuviana Sorrento line to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri, 35–40 minutes. The station called just "Pompei" is on another line and further from the entrance.
  • The train. The Circumvesuviana is an old suburban line: trains can be crowded and late. Keep a train 30–60 minutes earlier than the one you need as your plan.
  • Tickets. Named, with ID, and with a daily visitor cap; in season more people are admitted before 13:00 than after. Buy online in advance and bring your passport.
  • Heat and shoes. Pompeii has little shade and uneven paving: water, a hat and comfortable shoes are a must.
  • Pickpockets. On the metro, at Garibaldi and on crowded trains, keep your phone and wallet close.

On your own or on a ship's excursion?

Central Naples, Pompeii and Herculaneum are easy on your own: it is all metro and suburban train. A ship's excursion makes more sense for the Amalfi Coast — Positano and Amalfi — with its narrow mountain road, traffic and packed summer buses; doing it independently in one call is risky. An excursion also works well for Vesuvius and Pompeii in one day, and for Capri if you want a guaranteed return.

The ship generally waits for its own excursions if they run late — it does not wait for independent passengers. That matters most for the Capri ferries and the Amalfi road.

If your itinerary also includes Rome, see Civitavecchia (the port of Rome) in a day.

How do you make sure you are back on board in Naples?

  • Pompeii — leave early. Leave the site 2–2.5 hours before all-aboard time: about an hour of travel plus possible train delays.
  • Capri and Sorrento. Take a return ferry at least 2 hours before all-aboard. If the sea is rough, skip the island.
  • Traffic. Naples taxis get stuck in evening traffic; the metro is more predictable.
  • The right pier. Molo Beverello is for ferries, the Stazione Marittima for cruise ships. Head back to your terminal.
  • What to take. Your cruise card, the document your cruise line asked for, some cash in euros, water and a phone with the ship's emergency number.

Where do cruises calling at Naples start?

Naples is one of the most frequent calls in the Western Mediterranean, usually between Rome, Sicily and Malta, and many ships also take on passengers here. If you would like a cruise that calls here, look at these departure ports:

The same routes often call at Messina (for Taormina) too.

Common questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Naples?

At the Stazione Marittima terminal on the Molo Angioino pier, in the centre of Naples, opposite Castel Nuovo. Piazza Municipio and the metro station are about 5 minutes on foot, so no shuttle is needed.

How do I get from the Naples cruise port to Pompeii?

Take metro line 1 from Municipio to Garibaldi, about 10 minutes, then the Circumvesuviana train to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri, 35–40 minutes. The site entrance is next to the station. Allow about an hour each way including the change.

How much time do I need for Pompeii on a cruise call in Naples?

About 5–6 hours including travel: an hour each way and at least 3 hours at the site. Pompeii tickets carry your name, so bring a passport, and daily visitor numbers are capped, so buy your ticket in advance in season.

Can I visit Capri on one call in Naples?

Yes, on a call of 8–9 hours or more and with a calm sea: the fast ferry from Molo Beverello takes about 50 minutes. But there are queues on the island in summer and sailings are cancelled in rough weather, so come back with a big margin or choose a ship's excursion.

Should I do the Amalfi Coast on my own from a Naples cruise call?

In one call it is risky: the mountain road is narrow, with traffic and packed buses in summer. Positano and Amalfi are better seen on a ship's excursion, where the return time is planned around the call.

What can I see in Naples near the cruise port?

Castel Nuovo by the pier, the Galleria Umberto I, the San Carlo opera house, Piazza del Plebiscito with the Royal Palace and, a little further, the old town and Spaccanapoli. It is all 5–25 minutes on foot, and Toledo metro station, with its blue mosaics, is one stop from Municipio.
