A day in port

Miami in a Day From Your Cruise Ship: What You Can Really Fit In

For most passengers Miami is where the cruise begins. But if you are sailing two cruises back to back, or arriving at the end of a longer voyage, you get a whole day in the city. The ship berths right opposite the downtown towers, and the beach, the Art Deco and the Cuban coffee are 15–20 minutes away.

In short

Miami: ships berth at PortMiami on Dodge Island, opposite downtown. From the terminals near the bridge, the Bayside waterfront is 25–30 minutes on foot; from the far end of the island, take a taxi. South Beach and Little Havana are 15–20 minutes by car. Four hours covers Bayside and the museums or South Beach — after US border control.

Where do cruise ships berth in Miami, and how do you get into town?

At PortMiami on Dodge Island, right opposite downtown: a bridge and a tunnel link the island to the city. From the terminals near the bridge, the Bayside waterfront is about half an hour on foot; from the far end of the island it is twice that, so most people take a taxi. But first comes US border control: nobody goes ashore until it is done.

Into town on footOver the Port Boulevard bridge. From the terminals near the bridge (V, F, J) to Bayside Marketplace is about 2 km, 25–30 minutes. From the terminals at the far end (A, AA, B) it is 3.5–4 km with almost no shade. In the heat, take a taxi.
Taxis and ride-hailingThere are taxi ranks and ride-hailing pick-up zones at every terminal. Bayside is 5–10 minutes away; South Beach and Little Havana 15–20 minutes without traffic.
Getting around downtownThe Metromover, an elevated driverless train around downtown and Brickell, runs with no ticket needed. There are stations by Bayside (College/Bayside and Bayfront Park) and by the museums (Museum Park).
Typical callMiami is above all a start and end port. You get a full day here if you stay on board between two sailings, or on longer itineraries. Times ashore and back on board are in the daily programme.

DocumentsThe ship arrives from abroad, so everyone goes through US border control — even passengers who stay on board. You need the entry authorisation that applies to your passport, an ESTA or a visa (what to check, do you need a visa).
All aboardUsually 30–60 minutes before departure, and often earlier on a turnaround day. From South Beach or Little Havana allow at least an hour: the causeways and the port entrance can be jammed.

What can you fit into a day in port in Miami?

Miami is not a compact old town but a set of neighbourhoods 10–20 minutes' drive apart. Next to the port are the Bayside waterfront and the bayside museums; across the causeway, the beach and Art Deco of South Beach; to the west, Cuban Little Havana; to the north, the murals of Wynwood. On a short call, pick one area; on a full day, two.

3–4 hours

Bayside, the Freedom Tower and the bayside museums

From the terminals near the bridge you can walk to Bayside Marketplace: cafés, boats and a view of the ships at Dodge Island. Sightseeing boats leave from here for trips around the bay, past the villas on the islands. Across the road stands the 1925 Freedom Tower, where Cuban refugees were processed in the 1960s; it is now a museum open a few days a week. Another 10 minutes north is the Pérez Art Museum, with hanging gardens on its veranda over the bay.

5–6 hours

South Beach and the Art Deco district

A 15–20 minute taxi ride over the MacArthur Causeway. Ocean Drive is lined with hundreds of pastel 1930s buildings; walking tours of the district start at the Art Deco Welcome Center at 10th Street (ticket needed, best booked ahead). In front lies the wide beach of Lummus Park. At the island's southern tip, South Pointe Park is where you watch the ships head out to sea.

Full day

Little Havana and Wynwood

In the morning, Calle Ocho in Little Havana: Cuban coffee from a café window, cigar shops and the park where older Cuban men play dominoes. After lunch, a 15-minute taxi ride to Wynwood: former warehouses covered in murals. The best known are behind the fence of Wynwood Walls, with timed tickets; in the streets around it you see the murals with no ticket needed. From there the port is about 20 minutes away.

If you have been before

Vizcaya or the Everglades

Vizcaya, built in 1916, is an Italian-style palace with gardens right on the bay, 15–20 minutes from the port; timed tickets are sold online, and it is closed on Tuesdays. Or Everglades National Park: the alligator swamps are about an hour away by road, and airboat rides are run by private parks on its edge — easier on a ship's excursion.

Why does a day in Miami start with US border control?

Because the ship arrives from abroad — from the Bahamas, the Caribbean or Europe — and Miami is in the United States. You can only go ashore once US border officers have checked everyone on board, and that decides when you actually reach the city.

  • Everyone is checked. Usually in the terminal, with a facial photo and your passport; sometimes the process starts on board. The order and times are announced the day before — watch the daily programme.
  • Entry authorisation before the cruise. Even for a few hours ashore you need an ESTA or a US visa, depending on your passport. Apply in good time, and only on the US government website (documents and visas).
  • If you are staying on for the next sailing. On a turnaround day, passengers sailing on are checked separately and then allowed ashore. You usually have to be back before the new passengers board — the time is announced on board.
  • Morning in port is rush hour. At weekends up to eight ships can be at Dodge Island at once, with queues of cars on the bridge and in the tunnel. Go into town after the main wave of disembarkation, or walk if your terminal is near the bridge.
  • Heat and hurricane season. The sun is strong all year, and from June to November afternoon thunderstorms are common. June to November is also hurricane season: the call may be moved or cancelled.

On your own or on a ship's excursion?

Miami is easy on your own: every main neighbourhood is 15–20 minutes away by taxi, signs are in English and Spanish, and the Metromover runs around downtown with no ticket needed. If you want two areas in one day, a taxi between them beats any bus.

A ship's excursion makes more sense for the Everglades — an hour by road, and airboat rides need booking — or for a city tour on a short call. The ship generally waits for its own excursions if they run late — it does not wait for independent passengers. Key West is out of reach on one call: it is 3.5–4 hours each way.

How do you make sure you are back on board in Miami?

  • Remember your terminal letter. The terminals on Dodge Island are far apart, and a taxi driver needs the exact letter: "Cruise Terminal F, PortMiami", for example.
  • Traffic on the causeway and the bridge. The road from South Beach crosses the MacArthur Causeway, which gets busy towards evening. Leave at least an hour and a half before all-aboard time.
  • Museum opening days. The Pérez Art Museum is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Vizcaya on Tuesdays, and the Freedom Tower opens only a few days a week. Check before you go.
  • Water and shade. The walk over the bridge has almost no shade. Take water, a hat and sunscreen, and if it is hot, take a taxi back.
  • What to take. Your cruise card, the document your cruise line asked for, a few US dollars in cash, a light rain jacket and a phone with the ship's emergency number.

Common questions

Where do cruise ships dock in Miami?

At PortMiami on Dodge Island in Biscayne Bay, right opposite downtown. The terminals are named by letter and stretch almost 3 km along the island; which one your ship uses is in the daily programme.

Can you walk from the Miami cruise terminal to downtown?

From the terminals near the bridge, yes: Bayside Marketplace is about 2 km away, 25–30 minutes over the Port Boulevard bridge. From the far end of the island it is 3.5–4 km with almost no shade, so a taxi is easier — 5–10 minutes to Bayside. Downtown, the Metromover runs with no ticket needed.

What can I see in Miami in 4 hours from a cruise ship?

In 4 hours in Miami you can see the Bayside waterfront, the Freedom Tower and the Pérez Art Museum on the bay — all close to the port. The alternative is South Beach: 15–20 minutes by taxi, a walk along the Art Deco buildings of Ocean Drive and an hour on the beach.

How long does it take from the port of Miami to South Beach?

By taxi or ride-hailing app, 15–20 minutes over the MacArthur Causeway without traffic. In the evening and at weekends the road is busy, so leave at least an hour and a half before all-aboard time.

Do I need an ESTA or a visa to go ashore in Miami?

Yes. The ship arrives from abroad, and every passenger goes through US border control, even those who stay on board. You need the entry authorisation that applies to your passport, an ESTA or a visa, arranged before the cruise.

Can I explore Miami on a turnaround day?

Usually, yes: passengers sailing on are checked by US border officers and then allowed ashore. You have to be back before the new passengers board — the exact time is announced on board, and it usually leaves a few hours for the city.

How the club fits in

Cruises calling at Miami that are available in the club work on the same terms as any other route. You choose one way to pay per booking: the member price (INsider Pricing), roughly 17% below the listed price, or your Reward Points, which can cover up to half of the cruise price. They do not add up. To pay up to 100% with points, you need to have accumulated enough points and book 270 days or more before departure.

Not every cruise line can be booked through the club: check the specific sailing in the club's search, or ask us and we will tell you which itineraries calling at Miami are available in the month you have in mind.
