In short
Kiel: ships usually berth at the Ostseekai terminal in the centre — St Nicholas' Church and the Holstenstraße are about 10 minutes on foot; from Ostuferhafen on the east bank, take the shuttle or a taxi. Four hours covers the centre and the Kiellinie promenade; a full day adds the ferry to the Laboe memorial or the Kiel Canal locks.

Where do cruise ships berth in Kiel, and how do you get into town?
Most often at the Ostseekai terminal, right in the centre: the Maritime Museum is 5 minutes on foot from the gangway, St Nicholas' Church and the pedestrian Holstenstraße about 10, the City Hall about 15. Large ships sometimes berth at Ostuferhafen across the fjord, 6–8 km from the centre: from there it is a shuttle, a taxi or a bus.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where the ship berths | Ostseekai (terminals 27 and 28) in the centre, on the west bank of the Kiel Fjord where the Kiellinie promenade begins, or Ostuferhafen on the east bank for larger ships. Occasionally small ships use the Norwegenkai by the station. Yours is in the daily programme. |
| Into town from Ostseekai | On foot: the Maritime Museum in 5 minutes, St Nicholas' Church and the Old Market in about 10, the City Hall in about 15, the main station in 15–20. Aquarium GEOMAR and the Kiellinie promenade are 5–10 minutes the other way, to the north. |
| Into town from Ostuferhafen | Not walkable. If your cruise line runs a shuttle, it goes to the centre; a taxi takes 15–20 minutes. By bus: walk about 15 minutes to the Grenzstraße stop, then take bus 11 into town. When a big ship is in, there can be a taxi queue at the terminal. |
| Typical call | Usually 8–10 hours. For many sailings Kiel is a start and end port, so some passengers change over on the day you call. Exact times are in the daily programme. |
| Time, money, language | Central European Time, as in Amsterdam and Berlin; if your ship comes from Finland or the Baltic states, clocks go back an hour. Euro. German; English gets you by easily in the centre. Cards are taken almost everywhere. |
| Documents | Germany is in the EU and Schengen. If the ship comes from a Schengen port (Denmark, Norway, Sweden), there is usually no separate check; if it comes from outside Schengen, checks take place on board or at the port. Carry the document your cruise line asks for (what to check). |
| All aboard | Usually 30–60 minutes before departure. Getting back to Ostseekai from the centre is easy, but from Laboe, the Holtenau locks and especially Lübeck, leave a margin; to Ostuferhafen allow at least an hour. |

What can you fit into a day in port in Kiel?
Kiel is not a museum city: its centre was badly damaged in the Second World War and is mostly rebuilt. But it lives by the sea, and everything worth seeing is by the water. In 3–4 hours you can cover the centre and the waterfront; a full day adds Laboe by ferry or the Kiel Canal locks, and a long call leaves time for Lübeck.
The centre and the Kiellinie
From Ostseekai it is 5 minutes to the Maritime Museum in the old fish market hall — no ticket needed, closed on Mondays. Then the Old Market with St Nicholas' Church, Kiel's oldest building, and Ernst Barlach's bronze "Spirit Fighter" by the door, and the Holstenstraße, one of Germany's first pedestrian streets. Head back along the Kiellinie: at Aquarium GEOMAR you can see the seal pool from the promenade.
The ferry to Laboe
City ferry F1 leaves from the pier by the station and stops at Seegarten, next to Ostseekai; it takes about an hour to Laboe, sailing the length of the fjord. From the Laboe pier it is 15 minutes along the promenade to the Naval Memorial: a 72 m tower with a platform 85 m above the sea. At its foot, on the beach, stands the U-995 submarine, which you walk right through. Both need tickets.
Lübeck — on a call of 9 hours or more
Direct regional trains from Kiel main station reach Lübeck in roughly 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20 minutes. The old town on its island is UNESCO-listed: the Holstentor gate, St Mary's Church, narrow courtyards and marzipan. Allow 6–7 hours including the journey, and leave a margin on the train back — Ostseekai is another 15–20 minutes on foot from Kiel station.
The Kiel Canal locks
At Holtenau, 4–5 km north of the centre, the Kiel Canal meets the Baltic. From the viewing platform on the south side (Maklerstraße, in the Wik district) you watch huge ships being raised and lowered in the lock chambers in about half an hour. Take bus 11 to the Wik, Kanal stop or a taxi of about 15 minutes. Entry is through a ticket machine, so bring coins.

The fjord and the canal: what to watch from the water and the shore in Kiel
Kiel's best show is the Kiel Fjord itself, a long, narrow inlet that the ship follows for almost an hour on the way in. You can enjoy it from the deck and from the shore, if you know where to look.
- Sailing in and out. Stay on deck: leaving Kiel, you pass the Kiel Canal entrance at Holtenau and the Friedrichsort lighthouse on one side, and the Laboe memorial tower and the beaches of the east bank on the other.
- The Holtenau locks. The Kiel Canal links the Baltic with the North Sea and is one of the busiest artificial waterways in the world. A lock cycle takes about half an hour and ships come through all day, so you rarely wait long.
- The Kiellinie. The promenade runs north from Ostseekai past yacht clubs and parks. It gives you the best view of your own ship at the quay.
- Kiel Week. In the last full week of June the city hosts Kieler Woche, one of the world's biggest sailing events. The city is packed, hundreds of yachts are on the water and stages and stalls line the shore. If your call falls then, allow extra time for everything.
- If you berth at Ostuferhafen. It is a cargo port on the east bank with nothing to see around it. Head straight into town by shuttle or taxi, and catch the ferry to Laboe from the pier by the station.
On your own or on a ship's excursion?
Kiel is easy to do on your own, especially from Ostseekai: the centre is compact, the promenade starts at the gangway, and ferries and buses run to a clear timetable. The ferry to Laboe is a trip along the fjord in itself.
A ship's excursion makes more sense if you are at Ostuferhafen without a shuttle, if you want to see Lübeck without working out trains, or if you want to see the Kiel Canal from the water — boat trips through it are run as excursions. The ship generally waits for its own excursions if they run late — it does not wait for independent passengers. Hamburg is about 1 hour 15 minutes each way by train: only on a very long call.
How do you make sure you are back on board in Kiel?
- Remember your berth. Ostseekai and Ostuferhafen are on opposite sides of the fjord, 6–8 km apart by road. Give the taxi driver the exact terminal name.
- The ferry runs to a timetable. F1 to Laboe runs hourly or less often, and less again outside summer. Check the last convenient return sailing in advance and leave a margin — buses also run back.
- Check the clock. If the ship came from Helsinki, Tallinn or Riga, Kiel is an hour behind. Go by the time in the daily programme.
- The train from Lübeck. Do not take the last train before all-aboard: Ostseekai is another 15–20 minutes on foot from Kiel station, and Ostuferhafen is a taxi ride.
- What to take. Your cruise card, the document your cruise line asked for, a windproof jacket — the fjord is breezy even in summer — a little cash and some coins, and a phone with the ship's emergency number.
Where do cruises calling at Kiel start?
Kiel is above all a start port for cruises to Norway, but Baltic itineraries from other ports sometimes call here for the day or pass through the Kiel Canal. Check the specific sailing. Departure ports:
- Cruises from Copenhagen — Baltic itineraries, sometimes calling at German ports.
- Cruises from Warnemünde — Germany's neighbouring Baltic port.
- Cruises from Hamburg — sailings all year, some of them through the Kiel Canal.
- Kiel or Copenhagen? — the two start ports compared.
- Baltic cruises — routes, season and ports.
Often on the same itinerary: Copenhagen in a day, Warnemünde in a day and Oslo in a day.
Common questions
Where do cruise ships dock in Kiel?
Most often at the Ostseekai terminal in the centre of Kiel, on the west bank of the fjord. Large ships sometimes berth at Ostuferhafen, a cargo port on the east bank 6–8 km from the centre. Small ships occasionally use the Norwegenkai by the station. Your berth is in the daily programme.
Can you walk from the Kiel cruise terminal to the city centre?
From Ostseekai, yes: the Maritime Museum is about 5 minutes away, St Nicholas' Church and the Holstenstraße about 10, the City Hall about 15 and the station 15–20. From Ostuferhafen the city is not walkable — you need a shuttle, a taxi or bus 11 from the Grenzstraße stop.
How do you get from the Kiel cruise port to Laboe?
By city ferry F1: it stops at Seegarten next to the Ostseekai terminal and takes about an hour to Laboe. From the pier it is about 15 minutes on foot to the Naval Memorial and the U-995 submarine. The ferry runs hourly or less often, so check the return sailing in advance.
What can I see in Kiel in 4 hours from a cruise ship?
In 4 hours from Ostseekai you can see the Maritime Museum, the Old Market with St Nicholas' Church, the Holstenstraße and the City Hall, and walk the Kiellinie promenade to Aquarium GEOMAR. Laboe or the Kiel Canal locks need 5–6 hours.
Can you visit Lübeck from Kiel on one cruise call?
Yes, on a call of 9 hours or more: direct regional trains from Kiel reach Lübeck in roughly 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20 minutes, and the old town takes 6–7 hours including the journey. The ship's excursion is easier and gets you back on time.
Do I need my passport to go ashore in Kiel?
Germany is in the EU and Schengen. If the ship comes from a Schengen port, there is usually no separate passport check; if it comes from outside Schengen, checks take place on board or at the port. Take ashore the document your cruise line asks for.
How the club fits in
Cruises calling at Kiel that are available in the club work on the same terms as any other route. You choose one way to pay per booking: the member price (INsider Pricing), roughly 17% below the listed price, or your Reward Points, which can cover up to half of the cruise price. They do not add up. To pay up to 100% with points, you need to have accumulated enough points and book 270 days or more before departure.
Not every cruise line can be booked through the club: check the specific sailing in the club's search, or ask us and we will tell you which itineraries calling at Kiel are available in the month you have in mind.
