Where do cruise ships berth in Savona, and how far is the centre?
At the Palacrociere terminal in the old harbour, under the walls of the Priamar fortress. The centre begins just across the small bridge over the harbour: the Torretta tower is about 5 minutes on foot, the main street and cathedral about 10.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where the ship berths | The quays of the Palacrociere cruise terminal by the old harbour (Darsena), directly below the Priamar fortress. Several ships can be in at once, so check the daily programme for which quay and terminal building to return to. No tenders. |
| Into town | On foot: the old harbour and the Leon Pancaldo tower are about 5 minutes away, Via Paleocapa and the cathedral about 10. No shuttle needed, and the route is flat. |
| Railway station | Savona station is about 2 km from the terminal, across the Letimbro river: around 25 minutes on foot or 5–10 minutes by taxi. Trains run to Genoa, Albisola and Finale Ligure. |
| Typical call | Usually 8–10 hours. Savona is also a start port, so some passengers change over on the day you call. Exact times are in the daily programme. |
| Money and language | Euro. Italian; less English is spoken than in Genoa, but the cafés around the harbour manage fine. Many shops close at midday, roughly 1 pm to 4 pm. |
| Documents | Italy is in the EU and Schengen. If the ship comes from another Schengen port, there is usually no separate check; if it comes from outside Schengen, checks take place on board or at the port. Carry the document your cruise line asks for (what to check). |
| All aboard | Usually 30–60 minutes before departure. From central Savona the gangway is 5–10 minutes away, but from Genoa or Finale Ligure add the trip from the station: allow at least 1.5 hours' margin. |
What can you fit into a day in port in Savona?
Savona itself is an easy 3–4 hours on foot. On a long call, spend the rest of the day on the Riviera west of town or in Genoa — both trips start at the station, 2 km from the pier.
Priamar, the old harbour and the cathedral
The 16th-century Priamar fortress rises right above the pier: you can walk its bastions, there are museums inside, and the port and your ship are below. Across the small bridge is the old harbour with the Leon Pancaldo tower, then the arcades of Via Paleocapa and the cathedral, beside which stands the Sistine Chapel built by Pope Sixtus IV, who was born nearby.
Finale Ligure and Finalborgo
A taxi or 25-minute walk to the station, then 20–30 minutes by train to Finale Ligure. By the station are the seafront and the wide beach of Finale Marina, and 20 minutes' walk inland is Finalborgo, a walled medieval village. Check the return train times as soon as you arrive.
Genoa: old town and harbour
The train from Savona to Genova Piazza Principe takes 30–55 minutes; with the trip to the station, allow 1–1.5 hours each way. From Principe you can walk to the Old Harbour and Aquarium, Via Garibaldi and San Lorenzo cathedral. More in Genoa in a day.
Albisola or Noli
Albisola, the neighbouring ceramics town 3–4 km east, is 5 minutes by train or 10–15 minutes by taxi, with a mosaic promenade and a beach. Noli, a medieval village of towers by the sea, is about 40 minutes west by bus — it has no railway station.

Can you get to the Cinque Terre or Portofino from Savona?
Not really on your own. The Cinque Terre are about 2–2.5 hours by train each way from Savona, and Portofino about 1.5–2 hours by train and bus. A ship's excursion can do it, but most of the day goes on the road.
- Closer and calmer: head west. Finale Ligure, Varigotti and Noli offer beaches and medieval villages 20–40 minutes from Savona.
- Genoa is a real option. A big city with a historic centre about an hour away; on a call of 7–8 hours or more you get 4–5 hours there.
- Trains. Coastal regional trains are frequent but sometimes late, and Italy has occasional strikes. Check the news in the morning.
- The station is not by the sea. When you get off the return train, take a taxi straight away — walking to the terminal takes about 25 minutes.
On your own or on a ship's excursion?
Savona itself is best done on your own: everything is 5–10 minutes from the gangway, and a guided town tour adds little.
A ship's excursion makes more sense for distant targets such as Portofino or the Cinque Terre, and on a short call. For Genoa and Finale Ligure the train is enough — but remember that the ship waits for its own excursions if they run late, and does not wait for independent passengers.
How do you make sure you are back on board in Savona?
- Remember your quay. Savona often has two or three ships in at once. Take a photo of your ship's name and berth.
- The station is 2 km away. Coming back by train, allow 10–25 minutes from the station to the gangway, and the taxi rank can have a queue in the late afternoon.
- Not the last train back. Pick one that reaches Savona at least 1.5 hours before all-aboard.
- Lunch break. Many shops close from about 1 pm to 4 pm — if you want to shop, plan it for the morning.
- What to take. Your cruise card, the document your cruise line asked for, water, swimwear for Finale and a phone with the ship's emergency number.

Common questions
Where do cruise ships dock in Savona?

Very close: from the Palacrociere terminal the old harbour and Leon Pancaldo tower are about 5 minutes on foot, and Via Paleocapa and the cathedral about 10. The railway station is further, about 2 km, so a taxi is easier.
What can I see in Savona in a few hours from a cruise ship?

Can I visit Genoa from Savona on a port day?
Yes, on a call of 7–8 hours or more. The train from Savona to Genova Piazza Principe takes 30–55 minutes, but the station is 2 km from the pier, so allow 1–1.5 hours each way and be back with at least 1.5 hours to spare.
