Cruises From Rotterdam: Take the Train to Your Ship

No airport, no luggage limits, no early flight. From most of the Netherlands and Belgium you can reach the cruise terminal in Rotterdam by train — and sail to the Norwegian fjords, Iceland or the British Isles straight from home.

The short answer: Rotterdam is the most practical cruise port for the Netherlands and Belgium. The terminal sits in the city centre, a few minutes' walk from a metro stop, and large ships start their cruises here from spring to autumn — and, with MSC, in winter too.

Why Rotterdam

  • A terminal in the city. Cruise Terminal Rotterdam is on the Wilhelminakade, right by the Erasmus Bridge — not in an industrial port far out of town.
  • A historic cruise home. Holland America Line was founded here, and its old head office is now Hotel New York, next to the terminal.
  • Reachable without a car. Train to Rotterdam Centraal, metro to Wilhelminaplein, a short walk.
  • Pack what you like. No airline weight limits — handy for families, formal evenings and cold-weather routes.

What sails from Rotterdam

Schedules change every year, but the pattern is stable. For 2026 and 2027 these are the main options:

Getting to the terminal

The address is Wilhelminakade 669, Rotterdam.

  • By train and metro. Train to Rotterdam Centraal, then the metro to Wilhelminaplein. From there it is about a five-minute walk.
  • From Schiphol. A direct train to Rotterdam Centraal takes about half an hour — useful if family flies in from abroad.
  • From Belgium. From Antwerp it is about an hour by train to Rotterdam Centraal.
  • By car. Parking options near the terminal are listed on the website of Cruise Port Rotterdam. In summer it is wise to book ahead.
Good to know: there is no luggage storage at the pier. If you arrive early, plan a coffee or a walk with your suitcases — or check in a little later.

Practical tips

  • Check your boarding time. Cruise lines give each guest a time slot; arriving much earlier usually means waiting.
  • Travel the day before for long journeys. From the north of the Netherlands or from Belgium, a night in Rotterdam takes the stress out of train delays.
  • The first sea day. On fjord routes the first day is usually spent crossing the North Sea — it can be choppy, so keep something for seasickness handy.
  • ID for everyone. Norway and the United Kingdom have their own entry rules; check what you need for your passport and route.

And Amsterdam?

Cruises also start in Amsterdam, but since 2026 the city has limited ocean cruise calls to about 100 a year, with a single berth per day, and the terminal is due to move out of the centre by 2035. Rotterdam has become the more reliable starting point. Cruises from Amsterdam →

Take the train to Rotterdam Centraal and the metro to Wilhelminaplein. From the metro stop it is about a five-minute walk to the terminal on the Wilhelminakade.

Can I park at the terminal?

Is Rotterdam also a good start for people from Belgium?

Yes. From Antwerp it is about an hour by train, and very few large ships start their cruises in Zeebrugge.

Are there cruises from Rotterdam in winter?

Yes, fewer than in summer. MSC sails short cruises of 5 to 9 nights around Northern Europe from Rotterdam between October and April.

How the club fits in

Cruises from Rotterdam work on the same club terms as any other route. You choose one way to pay per booking: the member price (INsider Pricing), roughly 17% below the listed price, or your Reward Points, which can cover up to half of the cruise price. They do not add up. To pay up to 100% with points, you need to have accumulated enough points and book 270 days or more before departure.
