Disembarkation Day: Your Last Evening and Morning on Board, Step by Step

The last morning of a cruise starts early and runs on a schedule. If you know the order — luggage the evening before, an overnight bag, a time slot to leave — it goes calmly, and you can enjoy one more breakfast with a view of the port.

In short

On the last evening you put your suitcases outside the cabin (or decide to carry them off yourself), keep a small bag with documents, medicines and clothes for the morning, and check your on-board account. In the morning you vacate the cabin, wait for your group to be called and collect your luggage in the terminal. Do not book a flight home too early: in Europe usually not before early afternoon.

The last evening and morning, step by step

WhenWhat happens
Last day, afternoonLuggage tags and disembarkation instructions arrive in your cabin or the app. Your tag colour or number is your group.
Last eveningPack, keep out an overnight bag, check the on-board account. Put tagged suitcases outside the cabin door by the time in the instructions — often late evening.
NightThe crew collects the suitcases; the ship sails to the final port.
Early morningThe ship docks, often around 6–7 am. Breakfast opens early, sometimes only at the buffet.
MorningVacate the cabin by the set time, often around 8 am. Wait in a lounge until your group is called.
Morning, by groupLeave the ship with your cruise card, pass border control or customs if needed, collect your suitcases in the terminal by the tag.
Late morningAll guests are usually off by about 9–10 am; the ship is prepared for the next cruise.

Times differ by ship and port. The exact schedule is in the disembarkation information you receive on board.

Luggage: two ways

  • Suitcases outside the door the evening before. The most common way: the crew takes them off the ship, and you find them in the terminal by the tag colour or number.
  • Carry everything yourself. Many ships allow guests who can manage their own bags to leave first, early in the morning. Good for an early train or flight, if you travel light.

In the overnight bag (it stays with you): passports and documents, medicines, phone and charger, glasses, valuables, toiletries, and clothes and shoes for the morning — people do sometimes pack them in the suitcase by mistake.

On-board account, tips and the cabin

  • Check the account in the app or at the cabin TV on the last evening. Questions are easier to sort out at reception before the morning queue.
  • The bill is settled automatically with the card you linked; a printed statement is usually not needed.
  • Extra tips for the cabin steward or waiters, if you want to give them, fit best on the last evening. See money and tips.
  • Check the safe, drawers and the bathroom before you leave the cabin. Keep the cruise card until you are off the ship.

Flights, transfers and the way home

  • Flights in Europe: usually not before early afternoon (13:00–14:00), so a delay or a late group does not make you miss the plane.
  • Ports in the USA: every guest goes through border control, so allow more time and book a flight for the afternoon.
  • The ship can arrive late because of weather or the port. If the flight is early or the trip is long, an extra night in the port city is the calm choice.
  • Transfers: the cruise line's bus to the airport, a taxi from the terminal or public transport. Check in advance where the taxi rank or bus stop is.
  • A late flight? Some lines offer a morning excursion that ends at the airport; in many cities there is left luggage near the station.

The day you board is just as structured — see embarkation day by the minute.

Common questions

What time do you get off a cruise ship on the last day?

Usually between about 7 and 10 am, in groups. The exact time depends on your group and is in the disembarkation information.

Can I stay on board until noon?

Usually not: the ship is prepared for the next guests, and everyone must be off by mid-morning. Some lines let you wait in a lounge until your group is called.

When should I book my flight home after a cruise?

In Europe usually not before 13:00–14:00; from US ports in the afternoon. Before booking, check the arrival time in your itinerary.

Is there breakfast on the last morning?

Yes, usually from early morning, sometimes only at the buffet. On some ships you can also have breakfast in the main restaurant.

What if I put my documents in the suitcase?

Tell reception immediately — the evening before or very early in the morning. It is better not to let it happen: the overnight bag is for exactly this.

How the club fits in

When you book a cruise through the club, the end port and the arrival time are in the itinerary, so you can plan the way home before you book. Not every cruise line can be booked through the club: check the specific sailing. More about booking with points.

General information; disembarkation times, luggage rules and procedures differ by cruise line, ship and port, and can change. Follow the instructions you receive on board. Reislite is an independent information site run by partners, not a website of inCruises.
