Where to Cruise in April

April is the month the cruise world moves north. Ships cross the Atlantic back to Europe, the Mediterranean season begins, and the Caribbean still has its dry, sunny weather.

The short answer: for spring sightseeing without crowds, the Mediterranean; for a long, relaxed one-way trip, an Atlantic crossing from the Caribbean or South America to Europe; for reliable warmth, the Caribbean or the Canary Islands.

What is special about April

  • The great migration. Ships that spent the winter in the Caribbean and South America cross the Atlantic to Europe. Costa Diadema, for example, sails from Santos to Kiel on 5 April 2027.
  • The season starts in Rotterdam and Hamburg. From April large ships begin their summer programmes in Northern Europe.
  • Spring holidays. King's Day on 27 April and the May holiday in the Netherlands make late April a popular time for a short trip.
  • No more winter-sun crowds. After Easter the Caribbean and the Canary Islands are noticeably quieter.

No flight needed

From April the summer season begins in Rotterdam and Hamburg, with the first sailings to Norway and around Northern Europe; in Amsterdam the season starts in spring too.

Booking an April cruise with points

Every way of paying in the club also works for sailings in April that are available in the club. You choose one per booking: the member price (INsider Pricing), roughly 17% below the listed price, or your Reward Points, which can cover up to half of the cruise price; they do not add up. To pay up to 100% with points, the booking must be made at least 270 days before departure — for a cruise in April, that is roughly July or early August of the year before — and you need to have accumulated enough points by then.

Common questions

Is April a good month for the Mediterranean?

Yes, for sightseeing. It is mild, at about 18–24 °C, with spring flowers and fewer people than in summer. The sea is still cool for swimming.

What is a repositioning cruise?

It is the voyage a ship makes when it moves from one region to another for the season — in spring from the Caribbean or South America to Europe. Lots of sea days, few ports, and a long, relaxed trip.

Is it already fjord season in April?

Not quite. The main fjord season runs from May to September. In April some ships sail spring routes to Norway, with snow still on the peaks.

When do I need to book a cruise in April to pay fully with points?

To pay up to 100% with points, book at least 270 days before departure — for in April that is roughly July or early August of the year before — and have enough points accumulated by then. Points can also cover up to half of the cruise price.
