Cruising at Carnival Time: Brazil, Madeira, Tenerife and More

Rio and Salvador, Funchal, Santa Cruz de Tenerife: some of the world's best-known carnivals take place in cruise ports. Here are the 2027 dates, which routes get you there, and what to check so your port day actually lands on the party.

The short answer: a cruise is an easy way to see a famous carnival without hunting for a hotel in the busiest week of the year — your cabin travels with you. The catch is timing. Parades often happen in the evening, while ships usually leave in the late afternoon, so the route matters more than the ship.

Carnival dates for 2027

Carnival is tied to Easter, so the dates move every year. In 2027 it falls early in February — with one exception:

Brazil: carnival along the coast

Carnival falls right in the middle of the Brazilian cruise season, and several large ships sail the coast that week, mostly from Santos (the port for São Paulo) and Rio de Janeiro. On board, carnival is everywhere: themed parties, samba, costumes and a very Brazilian crowd in holiday mood.

To see carnival on shore as well, look for a sailing with a port day — or better, an overnight stay — in Rio or Salvador during the carnival days. Tickets for the samba school parades in Rio's Sambadrome, or a spot in a Salvador street party, are bought separately and sell out fast.

Madeira and Tenerife: carnival in the Atlantic

For a European, this is the closer option. Both islands are regular stops on winter cruises around the Canaries and Madeira, both have the cruise terminal a short walk from the centre, and in February the weather is mild, around 18–22 °C.

  • Funchal — the big allegorical parade with samba-style groups fills the waterfront on 5 and 6 February 2027; the city is decorated all week.
  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife — one of the largest carnivals in the world, with daytime street parties and music until late. In 2027 the street carnival runs from 19 to 28 February.

The one thing to check: time in port

This is where most carnival plans go wrong. Ships normally arrive in the morning and leave in the late afternoon, while the biggest parades usually start in the evening. Before booking, check three things in the itinerary:

  1. Is the ship in the carnival city on the actual parade day?
  2. How late does it leave — or does it stay overnight?
  3. Is it a tender port or does the ship dock in town?

A daytime street party may fit an ordinary port call. The night parades almost always need an overnight stay or a late departure.

Practical tips

  • Pack a costume or at least something colourful. Themed nights on board are part of the fun.
  • Take as little as possible ashore. A copy of your passport, your cruise card, some cash and your phone in a front pocket. Crowds are dense.
  • Watch the all-aboard time. Streets close for parades and taxis get stuck — leave yourself a big margin.
  • Drink water. In Brazil it is high summer, and the parties go on for hours in the sun.
  • Book shore tickets early. Sambadrome seats and organised carnival tours are limited.

Planning ahead with the club

Carnival sailings are among the first to fill up, together with Christmas and New Year — the earlier you decide, the more choice you have.

In the club there are three ways to pay for a cruise, and you choose one per booking — they do not add up:

  1. Member price (INsider Pricing) — roughly 17% below the listed price, paid in cash.
  2. Points plus payment — accumulated points cover up to half of the cruise price.
  3. Entirely in points — possible when you have accumulated enough points and book 270 days or more before departure.

Points build up gradually, with every paid month of membership. So for trips that fill up early, it helps to plan well ahead and check which way of paying your points allow at that moment.

Common questions

When is carnival in 2027?

In Brazil and in Brabant and Limburg, from 6 to 9 February 2027. Madeira's main parade is on 5 and 6 February. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is later than usual, with the street carnival from 19 to 28 February 2027.

Can I see the Rio parades from a cruise?

Only if your ship is in Rio on a parade night and stays late or overnight. You also need a separate ticket for the Sambadrome. Check the itinerary carefully before booking.

Is there carnival on board too?

On ships sailing in Brazil during carnival, yes — themed parties, music and costumes are part of the programme. Details differ per ship.

Is a carnival cruise good for families?

On board, yes: the programme is festive and the kids' club runs as usual. On shore, the big parades are crowded and late, so with young children a daytime event is a better choice.

How early should I book?

As early as you can — ideally almost a year ahead. Carnival sailings are among the busiest of the season.

Carnival dates come from the organisers' announcements for 2027 and may change; ships and routes come from cruise line announcements and may change too. Check the current itinerary when booking.
