When to Book a Summer Cruise — and Why Earlier Usually Wins

July and August are the most wanted weeks of the cruise year. Here is a simple timeline for booking a summer cruise, where to sail in the European summer, and what families should check before choosing a date.

The short answer: for a cruise in July or August, start looking about a year ahead and aim to decide in the first months of the year. That is when the choice of dates and cabins is widest. Couples with flexible dates can wait longer; families tied to school holidays usually cannot.

Why summer sells out first

  • Everyone has the same weeks off. School holidays across Europe overlap in July and August, so thousands of families aim for the same sailings.
  • Family cabins are limited. A ship has only so many cabins for three or four people, and connecting cabins are rarer still. They go first.
  • Departures close to home are popular. Cruises from Rotterdam, Amsterdam or Hamburg need no flight, and in summer that makes them especially sought-after.
  • Balconies go early. In summer, a balcony is used every day — and many people book with that in mind.

A booking timeline

  1. 12–18 months ahead. Cruise lines publish their schedules. The widest choice of ships, dates and cabins — a good moment to pick a route and a few possible dates.
  2. January to March. The busiest booking period of the cruise year, often called "wave season". Many cruise lines launch their promotions now, and the most-wanted summer dates and family cabins start to go.
  3. Spring. The choice narrows, especially for families and for July. Flexible travellers can still find good options.
  4. A few weeks before. Last-minute cabins sometimes appear, but rarely the ones a family needs, and rarely on the exact school-holiday dates.

Not tied to school holidays?

June and the first half of September have the same long days, warmer seas in the south and noticeably calmer ships. For couples and retirees, these are often the best summer weeks.

A checklist for families

  • Check your school holiday dates first. In some countries, including the Netherlands, regions have different holiday weeks. Overlapping weeks are the busiest.
  • Passports for everyone. Children need their own passport or ID card, valid for the whole route.
  • One cabin or two? A cabin for four is cosy; two connecting cabins give more space. Both are limited — decide early.
  • Kids' club age groups. Check from what age children can join, and whether there is something for teenagers.
  • Babies. Most cruise lines have a minimum age for infants, often six months and sometimes more on longer sailings. Check before booking.

How the club fits in

In the club there are three ways to pay for a cruise, and you choose one per booking — they do not add up:

  1. Member price (INsider Pricing) — roughly 17% below the listed price, paid in cash.
  2. Points plus payment — accumulated points cover up to half of the cruise price.
  3. Entirely in points — possible when you have accumulated enough points and book 270 days or more before departure.

Points build up gradually, with every paid month of membership. That is why planning ahead helps in two ways: you see your summer route early, and you can see which way of paying your points allow at that moment.

Common questions

When should I book a cruise for July or August?

Start looking about a year ahead and try to decide in the first months of the year. Families tied to school holidays benefit most from booking early.

Is it better to wait for a last-minute deal in summer?

For flexible couples it can work now and then. For families it is a gamble: the cabins and dates you need are usually gone by then.

Which summer month is best for a cruise?

June and early September are calmer and pleasant almost everywhere. July and August are the warmest and busiest — and the only option for many families.

Can I go on a summer cruise without flying?

Yes. Many cruises to the Norwegian fjords, the Baltic and the British Isles leave from Rotterdam, Amsterdam or Hamburg.

Can I pay for a summer cruise entirely with points?

Only if you have accumulated enough points and book at least 270 days before departure. Otherwise, the member price or points plus payment are the options.
